Default Hazards

I am about to have my car inspected for the first time in NY. I just noticed that I do not have hazard light capabilities.

It is supposed to be mandatory post 1966. Can I get away with not having one?

Thanks!

I was thinking of using that line. Since I have to trailer it to the inspection station I would hate for them to turn me away for something like that.

I may take my chances.

Are you going to the inspection station in Elmsford? When I went there they were absolutely not interested in the equipment on the car. They did not inspect the lights, bumpers, PCV or abny other equipment that Albany DMV says you need. All they were interested in is checking if any of the major components are stolen. If you built the car yourself, make sure you have your receipts as they can impound the car. The safety inspectors are cops, not technicians. In my case they were very helpful, even though they were not 100% happy with the paperwork.
When I filled out the registration application paperwork for Albany (again, they were very helpful when I spoke to them on the phone) they were looking for "self certification " that all the required equipment was on board. They asked for all the SAE numbers on the light lenses, but again, this was not a part of the inspection. I had taken off all my non compliant lights and replace them with the SAE approved versions; in the end I needn't have done this. But at least if the question ever comes up I am within the law. Hope this helps and good luck with the inspectors.
