Default Registering UK Cobra in FL

OK, so I FINALLY realized there is a Registration forum!

I will try to remove the posts I made in other forums so as not to clutter up the site.

To the issue...I brought my Gardner Douglas GD Euro in from Ireland last summer. I have spent a little time re-assembling it and am looking to get it titled/registered this coming week.

Has anyone attempted something similar?

I am being told that sales tax will be payable on the original purchase price. I bought the kit back in the UK in 2002, is there no allowance for depreciation?

I am also being asked for an MSO 'Manufacturer's Statement of Origin'which the manufacturer has never heard of. I don't know if this will cause a problem.

Anyone brought a GD or other Cobra in without an MSO. Bear in minf the body/chasiss came in and the engine was added here in FL. So, what came in was parts and not a car.

I went through the resgistration process not to long ago.

Florida is very easy. You can print out forms that can be found on the internet under the FL DMV. The form 82040 will walk you though it. It can also be found on the FFcobra.com search under registration in florida

Sales tax- take all your big dollar reciepts. If you paid sales tax for the major componets than you will not have to pay sales tax when registering.

This was my case.

The company back in the UK have never heard of them, unsurprisingly.

I did have a MSO or MCO.

If you are having trouble with this you might be able to pass it off as a home built car.

Florida is laxed when it comes to this.

You can probably do it yourself by mail if you you follow the form.

I would not try to pass it off as a homebuilt car. You open up another whole set of problems.

Contact the DMV and tell them it is a kit from England and does not come with a MSO. Ask them what they will require instead of it.

It may take a trip down there. I would have all my other paperwork done and ready when I go there.

Also the only receipt I needed was the original purchase receipt, none of the additional parts I put on.

They will need some sort of document even if it is simply a letter from the Manufacturer stating that they manufactured the kit (body and chassis). Virtually all kits (or assembled cars) sold in the US are either kits or "turnkey minus" - assembled car without motor. A lot depends on the individual office you register your car at.

What came in was a car without an engine. Did the car have an engine earlier in it's life? Was the car registered and titled in Europe? Did you pay sales taxes on the original purchase in Europe? I ask because transferring a previously titled car to another state by the same owner, is not the same as registering a new, previously untitled car.
