Default 289 body recomendation?

I started a thread in the all Cobra talk forum about the Unique and ERA FIA's. Now Im broadening my horizons, looking into possibly scratch building a car as an option. Also as an option I might be compelled to build a slab side, ( thanks Chaz for putting that bug in my head). Ive been looking at the bodies Mr Bruce has, and was wondering if there are any others you would recommend also.

I have been exploring a 289 build myself and you took the words out of my mouth. I would have suggested looking into Mr Bruce's bodies in addition to Unique and ERA. There might be some other more obscure sources but I think those three will likely be your most reliable sources for a slabside body. Superformance has started building a slabside roller but I don't know if you can buy just the body. Doesn't hurt to ask. Good luck in your search.

I know Sagebrush sells bodies or did, I cant pull anything up on thier website.

One correction to my earlier post. Unique advertises a 289 FIA but a slab body might be a one off proposition, although I'd ask. They redid the front fenders from flairs to slabs on the Allen Grant raffle car build recently, and left the FIA style rear flairs intact as they were on CSX2128.

JCF in Oregon has been making slabsides for longer than anyone. He will sell a body or a turn key car. I met the person who owned the original car that his mold was made from so we know it's accurate.

Ccx Ive been following your thread. Great build.

As for my novice status thats debateable.
While no I have not built a Cobra, I have built 2 prewar Fords from the ground up, and currently slowly working on a 65 Mustang, building it to A/S Trans Am specs. Not getting very far until I get this Cobra thing sorted

A/S65: look up G-pete's build thread. he's doing a scratch build and started with a carbon fiber body he got somewhere in the midwest, i think.

Sounds like you are primed for scratch....

Just plan:
1) 2x the $ as everything correct and accurate is big $$.
2) Plan on a long build as a car from scratch takes time sourcing, searching and locating parts. In the process figure about 5% burn on deals as that keeps everything in perspective.
3) Be sure to pick frame and body first as that dictates your direction.
4) 427's are easier when locating parts as they are much more common.
5) Every part is custom fit as a hand built frame and body are asymetric and fitting a must. That is at least my exp....

Last, I don't know Mr Bruce however with FFR base you might be in better shape with parts. Let me say, having parts up front makes build easier... A T-leaf car is bit of a chore first time out.

Heres one option that Im looking at for my build.

Slab body with flairs along the lines of csx 2230 (i think thats the #)
Car will be used for touring, and all around runabout.
Im thinking IFS, for a bit of improved ride and handling, jag rearend
Engine wise Im sticking with a 289, nothing fancy in the induction department, single 4bbl.
Factory hi po cam.
Trans will be toploader, as that is what I have.
Under car, side exit exhaust
Painted wire wheels.
Dropped center dash, w smith style gauges
Full street appointments.


If I go with a cut back door body everything will be the same except wheels.
Thats it. Im just trying to figure out the best way for me to get from here to there.
I made a promise to myself that I will be driving my Cobra on my 50 th birthday, I have just over 4 years to make it happen.

CSX2230 has some interesting flares. Rolled from the original flat flare it looks like but it's neat. Would be a cool project!
