Same thing happens in the UK, only the usual question is...
'that a Real One or a Kit Car?' - KitCar it is, but when thats followed by a derogatory sniff, then its not quite the friendly conversation opener you might have hoped for. Kit cars, in the UK, have a fairly bad reputation, as a grp body nailed onto a badly designed and built steel chassis, and worth very little. Given the money we put into these toys, it can feel a little hard to swallow it. Anyway, good thread, and really liked: '"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." - Hanlon's Razor" tagline! ...... Noted for future use. |

Here is the email next day... subject: Best of show Hello Peter…..I was really impressed with the Cobra you scratch-built. If I’d been judging the SCAT 25 show you would have won Best of Show! Really a very impressive piece of work. Keep up the great work! All the Best, Peter Brock Needless to say, whatever "the guy on the gas station says" -- is just warm air..... |
A friend used to always answer the "Is it real?" question with, "No, it's a hologram"

Funny thing is, I was looking at your pictures and it reminded me of the couple times at car shows when I was in the same positions as Peter Brock, looking at original and continuation cars to see how things went together on those cars so I would know what to do on my own car later. Made some owners very nervous at times, I'm sure, but I was respectful of the cars and didn't touch them while sticking my fat head into the wheel wells, radiator openings, etc.... to see what i could... :) I'm pretty sure the original comment from the gas station guy was his attempt to start up a conversation, but I was distracted at the moment and couldn't carry through with the conversation immediately. I did notice he waited around outside his vehicle for me to leave so he could hear it run, so I gave it a little extra for his benefit. (the smoking tires comment) Everyone in that neighborhood of used/new car lots and the gas station guys love to hear it from what they've told me. Even the girls at the bank love to see it pull up to the drive up window- which doesn't bother me too much.....:) Bob |

As you said, 1/2 of everyone (purposely leaving out the "you know" because I now misquote everyone) is below average. |
Perhaps you should, instead, concentrate your thoughts on whether or not you have timely flushed your brake and clutch fluid. And, for that matter, your coolant. Yes, I know it rarely goes below freezing in your neck of the woods, but the additives in your coolant still have a limited lifespan. That would be much more productive than dwelling on the beliefs of the mentally challenged.

C) None of the above |
I bet that beautiful KMS of RodKnock's still has the original brake fluid in it that came from day one.%/

You would be wrong. But I had PANAVIA (Steve Wood) go through the car about 2-3 years ago, IIRC. |

Tell them that it's a Factory 6 kit....leave them scratching their heads...

When asked if it's real, I usually respond, no, it's just a pygmy of your imagination. Sense of humor usually leads to a good conversation. Stupidity leads to stares or the classic, i told you so.
