Default Gas tank install

I'm almost done with the birdcage and I was planning on making some tank supports for my Superformance tank. It looks like it will be squeezed against the lower 3/4" tubing for the trunk floor supports.

I would like to have some clearance in this space and not squeeze the tank directly against the 3/4" tubing pieces. What would be a good material to make some spacers out of? Delrin, rubber, shipping peanuts?

I'd like to gain about 3/4" below the frame and support the tank along the length of the frame rails, so a long piece of 1" wide material about the depth I need with a shallow slot cut into the top of it to mate to the frame piece seems like it would take up the space and support the tank without damaging it. Does this sound like a workable solution?

BTW, what are you guys doing for fuel tanks and how are you mounting? - Bob

I used a medium hard rubber for the lower frame on my Lone Star.

I do not have any left, but I do have a little rubber weather strip that would work, if you need some. I could send it to you.

Hey Bob, What did you do about mounting your fuel tank? Can you post photos? Which spf fuel tank did you purchase? capacity? filler neck?

Karl,
I ended up building a frame that will support the tank from below and welded some supports to the frame work so I could bolt it in and take it out if necessary.
The tank is a 17 gallon tank, I believe, and the filler is in the proper location for a 427 filler. Haven't bought the filler cap yet, but will end up with a Finishline unit soon.
I'll try to get some pics as soon as possible.

Hey Bob, did I send you dimensions for a tank? I was wondering how that jived with the SPF tank you have. If you could give us a few dimensions I'd be interested. Thanks for waking up the scratch builders forum again it's been quiet over here. I know that just means were all working on gathering or making pieces !!

The SPF tank I bought measures 23 1/4" front to back, 32 wide, and 7 1/4" deep. At 10" from the front, the bottom tapers up to 2" at the rear, so it fits nicely under the car and doesn't show much from the rear of the car.
I'll post pics of the tank and the support I built in a few minutes.

Nick, no I didn't receive the dimensions for the tank. I would be interested if I can figure out how to make it work. Are you thinking of making your own tank?

Hi Bob, I have added a pic with dimensions to my gallery. I am looking at 42" wide at the rear, 6 5/8" deep at front. 9 3/4" from the back it tapers in to 26 1/4" wide at front. The rear is 3 1/2" deep so it is similar to yours. Those are dimensions for a roadster not the SC obviously. I have made reproduction tanks for cars before to look factory but made in stainless so yes I will be making my own. I was thinking of a saucepan lid for the sender recess. Did you get a sender with your gauges? If you need a better pic of anything I'll take a look and see what I can find ya.

If I didn't already have a tank, I think I would send some business your way for a bunch of pieces. It sounds like your tank would hold a bit more than mine- about 20 gallons or so?

How is the firewall/dash coming along?

The fuel safe cell is the go for a track car. I was going to make mine from 18Ga (.045") stainless. Did you check the dimensions off the picture? I assume they'll work it's off Brookes car CSX 3282. The drawing shows the fuel pickup on the wrong side according to this picture.

Bob I haven't scanned the dash and firewall in yet. Do you need them also? Do you have gauges and sender? Karl I will make you one but it won't be at the pace the rest of your project has been going. Easier and cheaper to make a few at a time as you well know.

Default Nick's fuel tank drawing

Thanks for the drawing. I will fab one today out of light gage alum and try to fit it in the chassis. Do you have photos or tips on exactly where it fits and how it is fastened? Does it fit under the trunk floor... centered? How close does the front of the tank come to the crossbrace on the back of the frame with the 3 holes in it?

How would 1/8" alum be for a tank like that? Or is stainless the way to go?
Does that tank need baffles for front & rear movement of the fuel?

I understand you will take a bit of time to fab the tank but when will it be ready? Or what year will it be ready? hahaha

Yes, I could use the firewall and dash if you're so inclined. Which layout are you planning on using for your guages?
I have Autometer guages and a sending unit from Finishline for the tank.

Hey lads. I'm thinking SS for the tank but ally would work. I was just looking at it being low and somewhat exposed so SS will be a lot more durable. Karl I will put a couple more tank mounting pictures in my gallery that may help. It fits right under the 3/4 tubes of the trunk floor and is held up by a couple of channels. Your CR prints show the holes on the rear C channel on the top not the bottom that hold the tank supports. The tank is baffled side to side as you see from the original pic I posted. I will probably put a baffle across between them for the front back baffling. If it acclerates as planned we should be needing it! I'd better get on with them then.
Bob I'm using the street car layout for Smiths but I have the SC one to scan. I'll do one of each for us. Did you see Karls dash? Get back to work will ya!

I'm trying, I'm trying......
Got some great deals lately on stuff I needed so still collecting parts. Still trying to figure out how to make the door hinges work as I welded the dash support tubes right where the bolt is supposed to come through. At least that is what it looks like when I looked at #4226 the other day.

Have you received Tim's footboxes and the other fiberglass pieces yet? I looked at the pics from the guy trying to sell the Kirkham/Shelby hybrid and his pics show all the fiberglass pieces needed. Are all these available from Tim? Guess I need to call him and see.
