Seat Location?

Please do not laugh, but where should the seats be put? Should they be in the middle between the door edge and transmission tunnel or should they be closer to the door or should they be up against the transmission tunnel? And how do you determine how much they should be angled outward in the front? Is there a landmark to aim for?

It might be easiest to sit down in the seat & see what feels most comfortable & mark it with a pencil. I think you would aim for the pedals as much as possible. YOu've probably thought of all this already though

Depends more on the location of the steel brackets on the chassis and how the seats supplied with the tracks relate in that position/dimension.
Or, are you wanting an original AC MKIII location. If so what seats?

Thank you for your replies Yes, I have tried different locations. Nothing feels strikingly comfortable to this stiff fat old man. It seemed reasonable that midway between the door and the trans tunnel would be the place for the seat. Unfortunately, I have the innate ability to consistently, after carefully considering all the correct options to make the only wrong choice. There is an old magazine article with a drawing placing the seats next to the trans tunnel and I wondered if that is where the seats are placed in the original Cobras and also if there were some reason for that ie more leg room, less air over the occupants with the top off, easier entry/exit etc. I have older Shell Valley fiberglass based vinyl seats. The chassis has no steel brackets. The seats will need to be mounted to the floor anywhere they are put. I would like to approximate the original Cobra position if reasonable but practicality gets priority. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

The picture is great but you lost about 9.5" in there somewhere. 49" & 15+15+9.5=39.5"
Ok, measured mine.
53" from bottom of door sill (front & back of door sill) side to side
18" Wide seat
2" gap on either side of sea in the middle of the seat
9" wide tunnel
=53"

Wow Mickmate, that drawing sure came in handy for my build. Mounting seats in my scratch build this weekend.
Oh, anyone ordering parts from Tim Gunning for there scratch build. What parts does he carry?

Glad it's useful Dave. I have parts from Tim on order at the moment. My buddies have ordered stuff from him recently and say the quality is outstanding. The pics of his stuff look good. What do you need? He pretty much has it all SC and street.

Good maths but not so sharp print reading. The 9.5 is between the outside of the seats. The 49 is to the outside of the seats. The 15 is distance across the seat pad. This is for 289 body BTW as if you couldn't tell from the 2 eared knockoffs, gas tank and filler location etc. From Cobras and Cobra Replicas Gold Portfolio 1962-1989. Thanks for posting pic.

were the FIA cars 4" wider in the interior or is that just my ERA? Looks like that 49" is wall to wall & that 15" seat cusion measurement? What practical sense is that?

Thanks for the “1000 word” information. My wife wishes I could put all my words so succinctly. . *13* thank you for the measurements of the 2” seat gaps.

Like elgecko, if time permits I hope to be installing the seats this weekend too.

I have a vintage Kirkey aluminum race seat in my Cobra....that's about how far it's cocked to the left too.
