Making a Hood
Does anyone have a step-by-step on building their hood?
I did a forum search and came up with nothing. I want to make a couple of hoods for my car to try some different scoops and venting configurations. Thanks |
Tony , the best solution may be to try and buy a couple of unfinished hoods from some manufacturer. It would not have to be a perfect fit as you could then modify it much easier than scratch building one.

Chuck, I thought it would be fun. I could buy a couple from Unique, but thought it would be a good stress release to make my own from scratch in aluminum.
Oh, I forgot to mention I wanted to make a steel tube hood frame and skin it with aluminum. |
you are a glutton for punishment Tony, but you could probably pull it off. I guess you would start by making a wooden buck to form the aluminum over.

there is a gut on the GT40 forum that builds those wild cars for Leno and such,I will try to get his website for you. He is the best I have ever seen at this sort of thing and a very nice guy also. Pat may remember his name

Start with a steel frame contoured to the correct bends, add a strip of steel to the top and sand it to get all of your spacing correct around the perimeter. When all this is done (including the hinges and reinforcements for the hood latches), you get a sheet of aluminum and start working it with an english wheel until it lays flat on the hood frame you already made. At this point, rivet the panel to the frame at the front and slowly begin working the edge of the aluminum over the steel strip (a torch is useful to put some heat into the aluminum). When the edge is completely done, mark your hood opening and cut it. %/ Then, back to the wheel to build a hood scoop of the size you wish. Of course, you can skip this if you want the street car look (which IMHO is cleaner). If you want professional type videos and resources, I do not think you can beat Kent White. I took his classes years ago, and he is one heck of a craftsman.

Would also look at Coupe Chucks website on AOL. Shows him making one for his Daytona and the process is the same.

The trouble with the hood is that it is a conical shape (tapered cylinder) that is also curved. I made a bumping attachment to roll cones on a set of Webb rolls. To get the curve I was going to use a bunch of tape on the rolls to build a male and female curve to the rolls. Then try and roll the taper at the same time as the curve. I believe the fastest and smartest way to get the shape would be to buy a skin made in a press with a die and build the frame and attaching angles to fit your car. I'm going to try and do the same thing with mine. Tony shoot me an e-mail I have a few reference pics for us. Joe Stafford is the man on this stuff, I have to go and see him as he is close to me. You must have too much time on your hands....there was a scratch built cowl induction hood here on the site about 6-8 months ago. Looked really slick. Look in Morris' gallery, about page 5 Also on the Hurricane Motorsports website under owners forum/public area, look up the build pictures for Alfredo's #1045. He has hand built a hood, doors and trunk from aluminum, has some interesting photos of inside and out. |

Tony, finally got motor/trans delivered on Tuesday, was told 3-4 weeks, ended up 13 weeks and they never offered any info unless I asked. Steering rack (right hand drive) was last thing and is supposed to be in end of next week. With luck it will all be done and ready to ship end of the month. Now my shipper is hiding from me so need to chase him down again. Six weeks to home once it leaves LA. Think I will definitely go with full insurance, at least I would get a bit back if the ship turns turtle or the 18 wheeler gets burned up...the old girl got a set of new Holden larger disk up front and a set of smaller ones (disk) on the rear plus a rebuilt trans so maybe I won't be flagging down the highway patrol so often for a lift home.
