CSX2287, the original Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe designed by Pete Brock, has won the "Car of the Year" title at the International Historic Motoring Awards in London U.K.

London’s St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel resembled a ‘Who’s Who’ of historic motoring yesterday evening, as famous names and familiar faces from decades of motoring and motorsport gathered for the International Historic Motoring Awards in association with EFG private bank and Octane magazine. The evening was in safe – and highly entertaining – hands, with racing driver and TV presenter Tiff Needell ‘behind the wheel’ to act as host.

The award categories, finalists and winners demonstrated the geographic spread and variety of areas that the £multi-billion international historic motoring industry now encompasses:

The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award went to a name that has been familiar to rally fans for 60 years. Willy Cave had his first works-drive as a navigator in 1954, in an MG Magnette for the soon-to-be-famous BMC Rally team. He would go on to co-drive John Sprinzel in various Sprites and to campaign TR4s and Rover 3 litres on rallies such as Monte Carlo, the Alpine and Liege-Sofia-Liege, as well as taking BMC Special Tuning’s 1800 Landcrab on the London to Mexico World Cup Rally. Now in his 80s, he’s still rallying, making him one of the oldest – if not the oldest – continuous competitor in motorsport. And he doesn’t plan to stop, telling the audience that he is due to take part in the historic Monte Carlo rally on his 90th birthday. Willy's award was presented by another rallying legend - Paddy Hopkirk.

Another motoring veteran – in fact one even more ‘veteran’ than Willy Cave – was also honoured. Former Jaguar test driver and race driver Norman Dewis, aged 94, received the Personal Achievement award, for his very active role in this year’s celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the D-type Jaguar; one of a long list of iconic cars in whose development he played a pivotal role.

Mercedes-Benz Classic had a very successful night, seeing off stiff competition to scoop two of the coveted awards – Industry Supporter, for its extensive international activities in 2014 marking 120 years of motorsport, and Restoration, for the remarkable and unique Streamliner 540K. Maserati also fared well, taking the Tour title for its Maserati Centennial International Gathering, which brought cars and owners together from all over the world for an unforgettable celebration in Italy.

The Vintage Sports-Car Club, which this year celebrates its 80th anniversary, had further cause for celebration when it was announced as the Club winner, while the Haynes International Motor Museum in Somerset, UK, which has recently undergone a complete transformation following two and a half years of building work and a privately funded £5 million investment, was rewarded with the title of Museum or Collection of the Year. It won in the face of strong opposition from four of the most prominent motoring museums in the USA.

Specialist went to HK-Engineering of Germany. World-renowned for its expertise regarding Mercedes-Benz 300SLs, in 2014 HK-Engineering saw cars it has prepared win prizes at Concours events around the world, including Villa d’Este and the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace.

The motorsport categories were hotly contested, with finalists from a range of countries. The Rally award was won by the Royal Automobile Club’s grueling 1000 Mile Trial, while the Stirling Moss Trophy – where drivers compete for the actual trophy won by Stirling Moss in the 1955 British GP - took Race Series and the outstanding Le Mans Classic – which this year attracted 110,000 spectators - took top honours in Motorsport Event.

Historic motoring has also inspired a host of magnificent events around the world, and France’s inaugural Chantilly Arts & Elegance, Richard Mille, which revived the French tradition of combining coach-building with the elegance of couture houses, was a very worthy winner in the Motoring Event category. And French automotive elegance was also celebrated in the winner of Publication – the splendid, thre-volume ‘Jacques Saoutchik, Maître Carrossier’ (Peter Larsen and Ben Erickson).

Finally, in the one category decided by the general public – Car of the Year – the honours went to the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum’s Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe CSX2287. This prototype broke 23 records at Bonneville in 1965 and in 2014 became the first car ever to be accepted into The National Historic Registry of the United States. Votes came in from around the world in support of this very special machine.
