I once thought the same. If you check the historical photos for Shelby Cobras, you'll find that the original 427 race cars looked almost identical to the 289 including all of the "tell tale" signs mentioned above.

uh....not totally correct. The 'first' built 427 (CSX3002) used a wide-fendered 289 race car body that was widened an additional 2 inches along the tops of the fenders. It did have a forward braced roll bar. The quick fill was located on the right rear fender. 3002 was a prototype because the body buck at AC for the MKIII was not complete at the time. From CSX3003 the MKIII body buck was used.

Now, you might be thinking about CSX2196. That's the leaf spring car that had a 390 installed and then a 427. It became known as the "turd" or the "flip-top" Cobra.

3159 was owned by Clem Hoppe. I saw it at Motion in '67 when I was a little younger.
It had Webers and if CRS doesn't attack, it ran 10's at New York National on those rock-hard slicks.
It sounded louder than mine does now with the same turn-outs.

According to the latest copy of the Registry Motion Performance drag raced a 289 Cobra of there own, which I think is the car in the above attatchment, aswell as preparing a large number of cars for customers.
