Smile All Five Grand Sports Together for the First Time

Vintage Motorsport reports that, for the first time ever, all five Grand Sport Corvettes will appear together at the Amelia Island Concours in Florida on March 9, 2003. Jim Hall, one of the cars' original drivers, will be on hand as the Honorary Chairman of the event...

That's a pretty significant gathering, considering they could only get two GS 'Vettes out at Monterey this past August, in spite of Corvette being the featured marque--

At Meadowbrook a few years ago there was a Grand Sport. It had been a rainey weekend so the ground was pretty soft and wet. When he was driving it to the award area, some moron in a mini-van was driving up the entrance road the wrong way and forced the Grand Sport to pull off the side and let him by. As the mini-van passed, the guy in the GS dumped the clutch and sprayed mud accross the van and then drove up to claim his trophy with mud all over the sides of the car.

I saw them all at Amelia Island. Impressive display! Most of the Chaparrals were there as well. Unfortunately I programmed my trusty Nikon incorrectly and the only pics I got were the ones taken on my wifes point and shoot.

I do have pics of all of them from other events here:
http://public.fotki.com/VRM/corvette...tes_-_racing_/

I think the two roadsters live in Ohio. Is that what you saw Quickjack? Or can you describe which coupe it was? Just curious.

I think 3 or so of the GS Vettes race on a fairly regular basis. GS#004 (owned by the Collier Museum) was the one that got crunched at Goodwood. Check out www.racingicons.com for the extensive restoration that two of them have gone through. Also neat stuff on GT40s.

Seeing all 5 GS Vettes race would be just as cool as seeing all the Cobra Daytonas race. Maybe a grudge match?

HH,
Great photo of GS#004 in action!
I've missed Goodwood (and the fantastic English beer) the last 2-3 years. They usually have something I really want to see whenever I don't go.

Quickjack,
I just can't imagine GS#002 covered in mud - it is just so strange to think about.

On the market, are the 5 Gran Sports worth as much as the original handful of Daytona Cobras? Just curious where they compare for high end collector value.

JDean,
I think that the last Cobra Daytona went for $4M, but that was a few years ago. I don't think that any have sold since then.

My sources tell me that a GS recently sold for $4M also. I suspect that a Cobra Daytona would bring more today and a GS would.
There are 6 Daytonas, not counting the Willment and AC cars. There are 5 Grand Sports. The currnt owner of one of the Grand Sports told me (numerous times) that he will be buried in the car. He has owned the car since the mid '70s.

Pure guesswork on my part, but I hope that helps.

Steve

I saw what was either a Replica or a Restored Grandsport driving up Pacific Coast Highway a few weeks back. Hard to say cause I was going the other way on my Bicycle & it does 35mph at best on flat land. It was a fine example from what I could tell.

Me no doing 35, I already had about 50 miles & about 4000' of climbing under my legs. I might be able to do 35 in short spurts under the right conditions...that's all I was trying to say The Grandsport was likely idling about 50mph

Thanks for the info on the value.

I suspect there are few automobiles in world today that would command any more dollars than these dozen or so Daytonas and GS's.
