Default Road Racing '64 Fairlane Questions

Hi Folks,
Do any of you have any knowledge or pictures of a '64 Fairlane with a 427 for road racing ran by Holman Moody and Alan Mann Racing?

Here is a reference to it - H-M is building clones.

Pretty cool huh?

Chuck

Default Thanks

Thanks Al for the pictures. It looks a little modern under the hood for '64 technology. I bet it's a blast to drive though.

I have read that when the '66 and '67 Fairlane was run in NASCAR some teams grafted in galaxie subframes so they didn't have to deal with the spring over top A-arm suspension (fairlane / mustang). So I really didn't expect to see shock towers on this car, but it still looks pretty modern.

There was a pretty decent article about the car in HOT ROD May 2006. They said it was built as an experiment for unibody cars in NASCAR and it raced in the Daytona Continental (sports car) race and came in 2nd with Fireball Roberts driving. I haven't found results of that race to confirm it though, and there is no mention of the car in the Holman-Moody book. It would be neat to see a picture of it racing with a bunch of modified sports cars.

Default I found a picture

As luck would have it, after whining "I've never seen a picture blah blah blah" I found one! Researching something else I was reading parts of the Walt Hansgen book (an excellent book BTW) and found a picture of the fairlane at Daytona. I also read that Augie Pabst drove it at 250K race at Sebring. There was a LeMans start and Augie got stuck climbing in the window. The rest of the field was away by the time he got it fired but by the end of the first lap he was in first place, it was that fast. Augie won the race and Walt finished 2nd in a H-M Falcon.

Anyway, here is the picture from the Daytona race. Note the Corvette Grand Sport, and Cheetah along with the Fairlane and Falcon.

Chuck,
Great photo - I'm probably going to have to go get the book!

The Corvette is not a Grand Sport - it is either a '63 or '64 - and probably driven by G Spencer, though it could be Yenko colours (white w/blue metallic stripes)

The Cheetah is probably either Bud Clusserath in chassis #4 or Ralph Sayler in the Cro-Sal car.

The lead car could be Bill Wonder in the Genie-Buick.

Roberts car is listed (in the incomplete entry list) as a 'Ford Prototype'.

The waterpump pulley looks overly large, used to slow it down. It appears to be an FE part???? Imagine that..................
