Default Shelby racing Corvettes, any info. on cars?

I formerly thought Shelby raced at Corvette or two in Louisiana, but today on a Corvette
site they say ihe raced at Cumberland (isn't that in Maryland?)
Here's the picture of the ol' Snakemeister standing by a black Corvette

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1997152

somewhere else on the site is a pic captioned that Shelby is driving a '56 or '57 white Corvette but the picture is so blurry you can hardly see the car.

In the background of the first picture is a red SR2 Corvette. I thought the tall fin SR2 was Bill Mitchell's own car so was surprised it was sold to Ebb Rose, Shelby's sponsor in the Corvettes, but maybe it was Jerry Earl's (son of Harley Earl) low fin car updated to a tall fin. Anyhow if you count

red SR2
white roadster
black roadster

that makes three but I had in a list of Shelby's races that he raced only two Corvettes--a SR-1 from Sebring and an SR2. But since the guy who posted the picture was there in person I will defer to him--ain't nuthin' like an eyewitness.....

There were three SR2s.
The red car with a high fin was raced at Sebring in '57 as #2. E.B. Rose raced this car later in '57.

Another SR2 with high fin was originally blue, but was painted purple metallic for the 1958 Sebring race, and was number 3. This car was the first Purple People Eater. The car is now blue again, and is owned by Rich Mason of NV.

The third car was also painted blue, but was not raced. That car had a short fin.

The tall fins were actually the same shape as the side trim panel from the '57 Chevy BelAir.

Do you know where Shelby raced the SR2?

Steve

Default Found reference to the Louisiana course

Mansfield Airport hosted a 2.4 mile temporary road course used at one time by the Sports Car Club of America. The airport is located northwest of Mansfield, Louisiana. this is where Shelby probably raced the Corvettes.

Now I have to find out if there was a race course in Cumberland.

Probably the present SR-2 owners can tell you if their cars were raced by
Shelby. I am surprised bill mitchell sold his red car but probably the pressure was on from GM to get rid of anything that looked like a race car

There was indeed a race track in Cumberland MD. I believe it closed around 1973? It hosted some pretty big sports car races in the late 50's and early 60's.

Default There is a book title something like "Lost Southern Race courses"

Probably privately printed and out of print but if I ever find it
I will list the tracks that were in operation when Cobras & Shelbys raced. Some of these lost tracks have a fan club that continues to post pictures on new websites of their home track's Days of Glory
