Question Painting

Okay, maybe some of you can help me out.

What can I expect to pay for a decent paint job (ball park figure)? I don't want a show car finish (well I do but don't want to pay for one) because I plan on driving the sh1t out of my car and I don't want to cry over every chip I get. How much body work is required on these kits and what does that equate to in terms of $. I plan on painting this summer and want to have an idea how much its gonna hurt.

Thanks
RED

Hi Red I did all the work my self on my SV used 03 toyota dark red / viper silver stripe PPG base and clear all the material ran $795.00 that did not include all the primer glass & paper another $500.00 ? and gave a friend $100.00 for rent on his booth. Some of the light colors are less.
Would recommend a stock color like you want to drive it and can fix the chips easy. Had some bids from $3500.00 - $5000.00

It also cost more to have a color matched so a paint code is better I'm working on finishing my paint right now. Fiberglass has it's own set of problems which should be addressed. Because of this I would recomend someone who has experience with it or is at least very meticulous. I am also painting mine with driving in mind. This is part of the reason I am doing it myself. I'm not familiar with SV bodies but fiberglass being fiberglass I would expect $3000 + for a decent job that you wouldn't regret.

If you can find a light color that suits you it'll save you money on the bodywork AND the price of the paint.
The PPG dark pearl red that I selected cost about $500/gal (!!!)
The body has to be nearly perfect for black or dark colors to look decent.

Another factor is stripes. Most painters will charge $500 or so extra for stripes.

The more time the painter spends on your car, the more it's gonna cost you.
I asked my painter to do a time & materials job (no quote) and keep a time log. When I paid him he had 42 hours on the log sheet. I'm very pleased, it looks great. Not perfect, but great.

Having said all that.....I paid my painter $2500 (cash) and the body work had already been done except for the final sealer and blocking (He blocked it 3 times). No stripes, double clear. The body was on a buck with wheels for his convenience.

HTH, Ed
