Post Msd 6al

I have been using MSD 6ALs for a number of years on a hot GT 350 (as well as more recently on a Unique FIA). After several failures with the box mounted in the engine bay, I noted that all the hotshoes running vintage Shelby Mustangs mounted the boxes (and they all have them), with vibration-dampening materials, in the passenger footwell. It is perplexing that MSD hasn't seen fit to make a more bulletproof unit, although there is apparently not a lot of competition out there in the rev-limiter field, or the MSD marketing guys have scared everyone else off. I know that I would certainly be willing to pay good money for a box that would take the heat and pounding better, but where is it?

Most of the CD box manufacturers will advise you to mount these things away from heat. Exhaust manifolds and headers will cook them.

MSD, although a good product, is no longer the only game in town. Crane makes a good unit. So does Accel.

I've mounted CD boxes behind the battery, behind the headlight, in a fenderwell, anyplace without high heat.

Cobra has a little shelf in the engine compartment where the hood latch goes, away from any header heat. Accel CD box fits, runs cool, and works fine.

I mounted my MSD AL unit on my B&B cobra under the dash on top the gear box tunnel. I'ts in the horizontal position mounted on the lord rubber isolators. No problem even with some near 100 F daytime temperatures. Mine tucked up near the engine bay firewall so it is barely seen when riding in the car.

Cool

To get the heavy duty parts, look under the circle track catagory. The 6T(part no.6400) has all the tougher components, and has mounting dampers. To get the built in rev control, try the 6ALN(part no. 6430). Also has weather tight electrical connections.

No, I don't work for MSD, but have dealt with them for years. They have great products, and stand behind them 100%. There was a post earlier about some people's experiences with them, and they were all very positive. The key is matching the product for your particular requirements, and following the directions closely. As they say, it's all in the details....
