Help, I now have oil consumption?
Have a 289, 10 1/2to 1 pistons, stock heads 60k overbore, roller cam and lifters. Single plane with a 600 holly and stock manifolds and exhaust. The engine began to use oil, when I hooked up the stock exhaust and mufflers. Have installed a weaker PCV and have an open oil breather. Consumption, seems less, but still there. On the plus side, it runs much better with the exhaust's back pressure. Maybe a 3.8 turbo PCV is all I can come up with. Vacume is low, due to the cam. Any ideas????

Roller rockers? Did you remove the baffles from the valve cover to clear the rocker arms? If you are running a hi volume oil pump this could cause a lot of pressure thru the PCV system. If so, you may consider a puke tank to catch and 'recycle' the oil.

What type of oil consumption? Are you buring oil (post does not specify)? Are you seeing a lot of blue smoke on start up (indicitive of bad guides and oil leakdown) or on heavy throttle?

HEADS FRESH, LIKE ALL THE ENGINE
I do not seem to be getting the typical, valve guide, blow by. I think, that it is going out, the tail pipe, When running down the road, at speed. I drove her to Oregon, 250 miles and used no oil. Put new mufflers and tail pipes on and kept the same H pipe. Used a quart, coming back. Commute about 100 mi a day and seem to be using a quart, every 2 or 3 days. It may be, that the baffle is out of the valve cover, as suggested, that, I will check today. I may, pull the PCV, and see what happens. I have noticed a significant increase in power, since the exhaust was added.
Thanks for the input...

OIL
Are you running the stock end seals on your intake? If your block or heads have been decked/surfaced the cork or rubber end seals can lift the intake off the gaskets at the intake ports, especially on the bottom(lifter valley) side. Then the intake runners can suck oil in right there and it will mysteriously disappear from the crankcase without leaking on the ground. If your valve guide seals are shot or your rings are used up, it'll burn oil also. Discoloration in the intake runners at the heads is telltale of oil entering. Sure you aren't leaking?

Think it is figured out. I was finally able to get with the engine builder and he had used solid chrome rings. The more I drive it, the less oil I use. I'm down to a quart, every 1,500 or so miles. He suggested I try straight 30 wt, for about 500 miles, to try to fully seat the rings? So, that's what I'll try next.
Thanks for all the input. I'm glad, that I did not use that type of ring, in the Cobra. What a pain!
