Default Mechanical Fuel Pump on Windsor

Ignore the rest of this post as it is redundant - I had missed bkozlow's answer to this earlier in the thread. He answer is spot on.

Looked into DriftingCloud's motor with my camera bore scope. The "cam lobe" on a 351 Windsor is an external thing bolted onto the end of the camshaft. This particular engine was obviously intended for an electric pump as the the lobe for the camshaft was not installed.

Noted elsewhere in this thread that folks had referenced a lobe on the crank. Most definitely NOT on the crank. All Chevy and Ford V8's I've ever built have a lobe on the cam - but then I certainly have not built every flavor of Ford or Chevy V8 so I am only making a 99.9% assertion. Always leave wiggle room

All that being said, It isn't that big a deal to add the lobe if your engine does not have one.

I have an electric pump - I only hear it when the engine isn't running.

The only time an electric pump would lose its prime is if it's installed above the fuel tank. Keep it low and it s/b reliable.

You can sit in my car with the engine off and never hear it run. It never loses its prime either.

DriftingCloud
did you remove the bottom of your fuel pump and clean out the screen?
I have a electric fuel pump that I use to pump gas out of tanks, etc. I have clogged the screen up and locked the motor up several times, in one day. I just remove the bottom plate and clean it out. I've beat and miss-used this pump for years but it still works.

I would not put it on a car but it does run.

No much to an electric fuel pump, motor, four vanes and a screen.

I had a Holley high pressure pump on my Lone Star. 42,000 miles and 13 years, it was still working.

it had a bypass and was mounted low on the frame, passenger side, rubber mounts between frame and pump. I could only hear it running when the engine was not running.

The last electric pump you'll ever need.

almost forgot

I had a plastic fuel cell that feeds from the bottom front of the tank. My pusher type Holley did not have to pull the fuel from the bottom of the tank to the top.
I think this helps prolong the life of the pump.

DriftingCloud,

Off topic, but….what did you do to your oil pressure gauge line? Is that some type of sealant on it? Mine continues to leak at the compression fitting. I've changed it out about 5 times in last 6 years.
