Default Checking/Adding 90W to a Toploader?

Anyone have any idea how to add fluid without dropping the tranny? Better yet, how do you check the fluid level in your Toploader? The fill plug is on the upper right side of the Toploader?????

Dave,
To check the level, remove the fill plug and stick your finger in the hole. You should be able to "feel" the fluid level even with the botton of the hole..... providing the car is level.
To top it off, I remove the shifter boot and stick a plastic hose through the opening in the tunnel and insert it into the fill hole. I then add a little at a time via a funnel hooked to the plastic line. Just keep adding a dab at a time until the fluid runs out of the hole. Put the plug in and clean up what spills on the floor and your done.

I added an access plate to the transmission tunnel. I found a perfect cover in the electrical supply department of Lowes or Home Depot. It was round with a gasket and two screw holes.

Default Trans Fluid for Toploader

I used a tool that most people use to add fluid to their battery , a syrenge type thingy with a red rubber squeeze ball on top of a long plastic tube. Hell I don't know what it is called, but it works.

Default Toploader

I use a flexible and add to the fill plug hole. Also it is a good idea to tap a drain plug hole on the bottom to change fluid annually..

You add oil to your toploader like any manual transmission or rear end, you simply pump it.

What drama! An auto parts store will sell a cheap pump just for gear oil--you can use it to draw the fluid out as well, and change it if you want to. To fill, fill until it starts to drip from the fill hole and you're done. Next time you have the trans out if you look, most toploaders have a boss (unmachined) on the bottom for a drainplug. You can drill and tap a hole if you want a drain, but after doing so be sure to clean the case very well before re-assembly. The pumps are nice because they usually come with about 1-2 feet of hose, which means that the gear oil container doesn't have to be under or in the car, which will lessen the chances of a stinking mess.
