Question Hi-Perf Brakes for Mustang II spindle?

OK guys, since I'm sure a few of you have mustang 2 spindles on your cobra (ahem,,,,,,, uhhhhh- roadster thingies with stripes)

I need some suggestions.

I am working on a "new project" that will have a mustang 2 based front end.

I am already looking strongly at the "pole position" adjustable upper control arms,
and some good quality spindles (heidt's maybe???), and
a tilton/comp type multi cylinder pedal assembly

.....anyways, I need some suggestions for a good track/street brake system that is light and reliable.
I really want to keep the weight down so am also interested in strong lightweight hubs.
If you have pics- I'd like to see 'em too.

The car I am working on will be a mid engine design about 275-300hp peak & around1600 pounds total when done.

For good lightweight MII alum hubs & calipers, look on baer website. baer.com. Not sure if Heidts makes OEM style spindles, they make dropped spindles.

Thanks, I looked at Willwood stuff, but it seems more geared for drag racing with solid rotors etc.

I didn't know BAER had any must 2 stuff,,,,,, I'll check them out.

I definately need stock height spindles. The chassis is set up to have about 4 inches of ground clearance with stock ones,,,,, so a drop spindle is a no-no for me.

I just want to get a good strong spindle that I won't have to worry about occaissonally "climbing" the FIA curbing on the racetrack with

I was also looking for a decent bolt on kit. There are kits using vented rotors and Wilwood Dynalights, but Dynalights are really one size too small for track use. The Superlight is the right caliper (at least for a Wilwood) and I couldn't ind any bolt on kits. I am fabbing adapters and hats to go with the Wilwood calipers and a Coleman rotor. I'll try to post some results when it's done.

Please let us know what you decide to do since this is already scheduled as an upgrade project for next winter. I have looked at the Wilwood product line and it appears to me that they only have solid rotors available for the setup I need but I would prefer vented rotors. I would prefer to buy everything from one company since this should result in less problems making the various pieces fit together.

Wayne,
the ultralite set up has vented rotors. the p/n for the whole kit is 140-2129-B. This is the kit the Weavers install on the Unique cars. Go to their website for some pictures of them. I am currently involved in the installation of this setup. Wilwood calls out for a master cyl bore diam of 1 1/8". We Plan on using a Corvette master cyl, which has this diam.

There are a few threads with the same question. I was looking for a replacement frint brake system for mine and it was down to Baer and Master Power. I went with the Master Power for two reasons. They are lighter than the Baer (Bear says the heavy rotors dissapate the heat better) and fit in my 15" rims better. the Bears had very minimal clearance. Had I larger rims I would have gone with Baer. Just my .02 though.

baer.com Most comprehensive rotor, caliper, aluminum hub setups for MII using 15", 16", & 17" wheels, and 11", 12", & 13" rotors for street, super street, and track use. Second would be Stainless Steel Brakes. They have a 4 piston caliper in both iron and aluminum, but no lightweight rotors. They use '75-'80 Grenada 11" all iron rotors. Nothing for MII in 13" rotors, whereas Baer does.

Might want to graft '79 up Mustang front suspension from FFR. Brake selection is nearly unlimited.

Thanks for the replies.
I am going to try & see if "Morrison" has a site with their spindles on it.

I definately DO NOT want to use production rotors like granada etc, because they are too heavy,,,,,,,, (too much unsprung weight- especially for a light mid engine car, like what I am working on.)

I DO want vented rotors for roadcourse use.
I am going to take a closer look at the BEAR stuff, and keep researching for the moment.

Default Wilwood leaks

I have wilwood pedals and there composite cyl's in my coupe. I run the Granada 11" in front and 10 1/2 Lincoln's in back. Rock hard pedal, fair brakes and three complete sets of leaky cyl's.
Tired of changing them and repainting the firewall. They leak around were the alloy cyl and reservoir are bonded together under the dust boot. Sill leaking, I give up! Ray

hi Alan

IM useing a coleman hub with costom rotor plate.I have the 12 3/16 rotor 1 1/4 wide.I had to shave the back side of the hub because of the rotor plate.Also Im useing the coleman bumpsteer kit with a rod end for the tie rod.For calipers IM useing the Billit Superlites from Willwood. All this makes for real tight clearences in the wheel. I was going to post a question on the forum about which of the wheels offer the most caliper clerance.

Well, I'm not totally certain yet.

Initially was going to use 17 inch all around,,,,,, but like the idea of using the vintage "big N' little" look like the originals had,,,,, so I might be using 16s in front and 17s in rear.

It also depends on how tall a tire I need in the front, once I figure out how large a rear one I have room for.

I am planning on getting some of those light 3 piece "ferrari-ish" compomotives for the car, (or maybe some "period correct" style McLaren wheels from Jongbloed),,,,,,,,and want to run as wide a tire all around as possible. (hopefully 315 35 17s in the back)

side note: I found/bought a porsche transaxle for the project this morning.
It should arrive via UPS in a few days.

Also have a bud who builds "vintage race engines" that called me & has an "extra" all aluminum 215 Buick V8- he thought I might consider using.

I hadn't thought of it as a potential powerplant, but the price is right and the motor only weighs 300 pounds.......
......so I'm going to his place Sunday with a "tape measure" to see if it is "doable".

Yes- I think I'm qoing to be eating alot of macoroni & cheese soon

13" and they come whit a spindle that will adjust for bump steer, it will hold two calipers (Alcon) and will not shim the wheel our like the bear units do Three is an AL Hub available and a lot of options on the rotors. and even whit the spindle they are less than the Bear Bill E

Bill- that is an impressive set up.

I just found the "Coleman" site, and it is great!
They have a large selection of parts, and actually list the weight & dimensions of most components!

You can also buy the components individually,,,, so that you can "spread" the costs out.

They have some serious pinto (mustang II type hubs) too ,,,,real strong that weigh 10 pounds each though.

I guess, I must've went temporarily "brain dead",,,, because it never even dawned on me to check out the circle track type shops for parts

Now at least I can start comparing dimensions,weights etc from BAER,Wilwood, &Coleman.

the roater is Coleman and the caliper is to. But the rest is our own design we do have an AL hub available if you put the Coleman stuff on as is it will push your wheel out, and change your baring center This will make it hard to keep the out side baring from falling. And ther is no provison for bump steer ajustment. (Dive deeper pull out harder and you can win)

We offer this set up to club members at cost tax & shipping for now
