Default Transmission Rattle

When I get my car up to around 4000 revs I develop a really loud rattle coming from right under the shifter. I removed the rubber boot and nothing was loose. The sound is almost like a washer that is vibrating, loud enough to hear it over the wind/exhaust noise at 80mph...If I grasp the shifter really hard when it is doing it > it stops...Any ideas ??

Is this happening with the car in neutral or does the driveshaft have to be turning? If the latter, could the driveshaft be out of balance?

Only when the car is moving and under power does it happen...But what is strange is that if I grab the shifter really tight it stops...

Thumbs up

Hi,
Check you tranny mount, the bolts to the frame could be loose or mount broken. Look for anything else rubbing up or near the tranny, speedo cable,E brake ,etc.
Perry.

You may have split the plastic cup that the shifter "ball" sticks into in the tranny. Or it could be a thousand other things.

I had been out of town for a week and when I got back there was a small (size of a nickle) puddle of red tranny fluid under it. Any ideas if this could be a part of the noise or another unrelated prob ?

Sorry, would have said this earlier but I just realized it last night.
