That would work if it was a voltmeter. An ammeter needs to have all the car's current flowing through it (except battery cables) to work, right now yours is just measuring the current draw of the fuel gauge, which is nothing. The 10 awg red wire that connects the fuse panel to the hot side of the starter solenoid (your's may be different, this is a typical setup) this wire needs to be bisected by the ammeter. Voltmeters are safer and easier to install.
