I have play in my steering. At high speed itget a little shakie. Is there such a thing as a steering dampner? Any suggestions?

If you actually have play (moving the steering wheel more than 1" does not move the rack), I would try and reduce that first. You could have play in the rack itself or play in the steering column universal joints. Check the radial play at the ends of the rack. Most racks have preload adjustment (rack against pinion). Adding preload will add a bit of dampening too.

If the shaking problem persists after the play is fixed, have the tires balanced (and check for runout).

After reviewing your pictures, I believe that the shaky steering has something to do with that very impressive hood ornament! I know I'd have trouble keeping it steady.

I would definately check the u-joints in your steering linkage, If you have a lose set screw, it could be dangerous. What kind of steering rack do you have? My car has an MGB steering rack (just like the original Cobras) that has shims that can be removed to tighten up the play between the pinion and the rack. If you can give more information about the car, someone here may be able to help.

I got your email. I was thinking about the best way to solve your problem. The very best way to do this is to have someone sit in the car and jerk the steering wheel back and forth while you watch underneath. You should be able to easily detect where the lplay is, especially if it make a noise. It could be steering links tie rod ends or wheel bearings.

I had a bad problem with the end link bushings in my rack. The spherical joint wears and develops play. I was able to add shims to take the play out but after a while you have to do it again. I was able to buy a brand new steering rack on ebay, so when I have time, I'll install that and completely solve the problem.
