Default Side Pipes

Does you loose HP with having side pipes? Are there any side pipes that are better than others?

Hi:
When my engine was dynoed, after break in, on fluid drive dyno, on the test stand, with just headers and then again with everthing the same but with the additon of NEW side pipes with integrated glasspacks, the HP reduction was about 70 BHP if memory serves from the documentation from DCE. However, after 10+ years, there is not much glass left in those packs, I would imagine so perhaps there is less loss.

If you do not run sidepipes, what are your options? Under carriage exhaust? I suspect that an under carriage exhaust woud be much much more restrictive than the sidepipes?? Yes?

Tried to get pipes to run under the chassis but settled for the easier option of side pipes.

Due to noise levels I built a second set of pipes that have mufflers that are twice the length of the original side pipes.

Side pipes now all muffler.

From 111dB down to 96dB - nearly acceptable.

I also had to run a few half circular baffles inside to reduce noise but re directing the gases.

The end result is a loss of about 40 HP - estimated.

About 5 - 10% - but bearable to drive for an old far#.

However, I find the pipes still a bit loud even at 96dB. Had my son drive past and down the road and they sound great.

Importantly they look great also. So I put up with them, like his stereo.

I started with 4" pipes and ran a 2 1/4 perforated inner pipe. This was lightly wrapped in steel wool.

The exhaust guy did the welding and final fit. Cost was kept low. However the real pain now is I must take them apart to powdercoat/heatcoat them.

I am only talking side pipes here. I had the extractors tunned length built and they were previously coated with the original 111db side pipes.

I guess just experiment. Perhaps someone has specifications that you may be able to replicate?

Cheers

Bernie
