How do I remove the existing alignment dowel pins in my FE block? Seems my top-right pin is in too deep and I barely get contact through the bellhousing? I tried pulling with visegrips without any luck.
After 2 measurements looks like I'm in the area of .017 out of line...so I will need to use the offset dowels.
What a miserable day this has been. Those of you who have gone through this process can comiserate!

Another option is:
to drill you bellhousing oversize,
make some hollow dowels that fit over your alignment pins,
zero out your bellhousing,
weld in your new alignment dowels.

Carefully drill the correct size hole into the dowell and then either tap it with either 1/4" or 5/16" tap or use a self threading slide hammer to jerk the dowell pin out. A little rust penetrant might help too.

If you have a welder (arc welder preferred) weld a piece of all-thread onto it, slip a short piece of pipe over it, put a nut and washer on the end of the all-thread and tighten the nut to extract it...
Just an update...almost there. One of my dowel pins was a real B!@#H to get out. I drilled and tapped it and used a slide hammer to try to pull it. Eventually pulled the threads. Tried heat. Then I found the magic tool. Bolt-outs from Craftsman. THese things ROCK. I put one on the dowel and gave it a couple spins with my impact wrench. The tapped it again and pulled it out with the slide hammer. The second one came right out with the slide hammer.
I bought the offset dowels. I was measuring .017 out of alignment so I was borderline between the medium and large offset dowels. I tried the medium. First attempt .015, second attempt after a twist od the screw driver was .011, last attempt was .006. I think I need to step up to the next size dowel...good thing I ordered both. Should be done tomorrow.
