Carb leaking gas into intake

I was checking out the car this morning and noticed my carb gasket looked wet. It was saturated with fuel. I believe I'm getting fuel leaking from the carb while the car is just sitting in the garage. It hasn't been run in a week or so. It was definitely coming from inside the barrell. What causes the carb to leak like this? What is not closed that should be?

Could be float level, if you haven't set it or don't know how, fine someone who does.

Sounds like you may have a bad power valve. Take the site plug out and look inside the carb to check the fuel after you shut it off. It should just drip out of the hole. Check it again the next morning. If it is way down you may have lost the valve.
Also does the car blow black smoke after a restart?

Thanks for the replies. I've taken the carb apart and replaced all gaskets. I filled the bowls to just below the site plugs. I'll check in the morning to see the level, and if they are the same as now. I had just replaced the power valve, but during tuning I did get an intake backfire. Hopefully it didn't blow it! Thanks again.

Bruce, you're a big head! Not sure if the power valve was leaking around the gasket or if it is actually bad. I can't tell about the valve by looking at it and everything was wet when I pulled it apart on the primary side. Anyway, going to just stop by the parts store on the way home tomorrow and pick up a new one rather than chance it. Thanks again.

Was the "Well" behind the valve full of fuel? If so the valve is bad. You could of course put your mouth on it and see if you can suck air past it but I would just buy a new one. Unleaded does not taste near as good as good old leaded!

Had the same problem on my 1967 427 Vette with tri power.
Replaced everything in site. Turned out to be a warped metering block. May not be the case with yours, as my carbs were original 1967 units.If all else fails check the block with a straight edge.
