Thumbs up 1965 mustang 9" rear question

I have a 9" rear from a 1965 mustang in my cobra. Did that year mustang have 28 or 31 spline axles?

Any help you can give me would help.

Thanks

The 9" rear in a '65 Mustang will have 28 spline axles. There are no standard Ford 31 spline axles for this housing.

The 31 spline axles came in the wider '67-'70 rears (2" wider than '65-'66) with the big-blocks.

regards,

Jeff

Thanks for your help jeff. The guy who did the work couldn't remember what the axles were, but he thought that the center chunk was from a 78 bronco with the outer gears switched. Does that sound correct?

Rob, that's kind of interesting as the only 65 Mustang to receive the 9 incher would be a HiPo, making your axle housing somewhat rare to begin with. As far as the Bronco 3rd member goes, I've never personally seen a 31 spline setup in a Bronco so changing the axle gears shouldn't be an issue. Now having said that, 83 people are going to jump out now and claim 31 spliners are common. So keep in mind that I only have experience with 2 Broncos, so I may not be the world's foremost expert. But then you know the definition of an "expert" right? Well, an "Ex" is a has-been and a "Spurt" is a drip under pressure! LOL
