Strange Volvo Happenings
Got this from a friend about his 2002 Volvo:
The Volvo has been stalling recently. When slowing down, when you let off the accelerator, the RPM’s dip to 500 , lights dim power steering fails and sometimes the engine cuts off. Usually the engine cuts off when turning, exit ramp or 90degree turn. doesn’t cut off at stoplights only when rapidly slowing down, otherwise it idles like a dream no problems..
Anyone have any ideas ??

Just a guess, but could he possibly have a fuel pick up problem or a fuel/air sensor that is screwing up. The turning, rapidly slowing down, and all would make the fuel in the tank be moving around a lot, especially if it was half empty or more. Just guessing.

I think he mayneed a new fuel pump or fuel filter. But, I tend to replace things that aren't broke.

I think Pat may be right. The IAC controls the idle and I think is affected by temperature and throtle (sp).

The car is a 2001 with the original battery. Any chance this could be electrical ? He said the lights dim when it starts to cut out.

That is a possibility and the fuel pump is also electric, but a lot of cars have lights that will dim somewhen the motor stops and there is no juice coming from the alternator to help with the extra load. But it wouldn't hurt to check, though I don't really see how turning or slowing down fast would affect the electric system. And I am still just guessing as I don't have any cars with this stuff on them.

I highly doubt it is a battery issue....there needs to be a threshold voltage to start it in the first place...

Jerry,
Just tell him; sorry man, but anyone who drives a car that sounds as if it were named after a part of the female anatomy deserves to get cut off. LOL

My daughter had an Escort that started surging after warm up untill it finally died. Spent a wad ($600)with technician. Turned out to be the hose that supplied the MAP sensor ,manifold absolute pressure.A six inch piece of vacume hose was soft. When warm the engine went from a warm up mode to looking at all the sensors. The hose would colasp and the cumputer would start moving the idle motor and surges would get wilder until the engine stopped.
A freind of mine came over afterwork in the dark outside and ran it down in five minutes Oh yea he had a $3500 tester and another $1800 that would read the hertz signal that the MAP sensor sends.
