Water transfer for a heater. If you aren't running a heater just plug it.

Temp sending unit for Emmissions. Or, thermal switch for vacuum line routing. Or, cold air lever activation switch for cold startup. Or, heater hose connection. Or, HVAC temp switch for blend.
Got any of these??? Hey, it's a spot you can detect, bleed or measure the coolent before the T'Stat. If you do not want to use it, plug it. hope this helps. |

Options
If you're not running a heater, you can just plug it. What I did was I used it for a burp valve. I used a small brass pipe with an elbow and a drain cock fitting. When I fill the system with coolant, I fill it until coolant comes out of the drain valve thus removing all the air from the system.

Yeah I was trying to figure out how to plug it. Do I just go to Home Depot to get the parts? And I also will need to plug the heater hole on the water pump.
I'm also seeing a lot of guys that have a nice pipe/fuel line from the Carter mech. fuel pump to the Demon Carb fuel line with fittings I have not seen. They don't seem like AN fittings though. Any input on that? Sid |
Burp Valve
You hit it right on the head - I got the piping parts from Home Depot.
As for the fuel lines fittings, in the pic I posted I had a single pumper on the engine with just a braided line from the pump to the carb, with the inlet on the driver's side. I have since changed over to a double pumper with the inlets on the passenger side. I don't have any pics to post but I will take a few when I get a chance and post them. I run a braided line from the pump up to a filter that is in front of the carb. Then it runs to an AN "T" fitting for the front carb inlet and to an AN elbow fitting for the rear inlet. Most of the racing warehouses, Summit or Jegs, carry preformed braided line setups with fittings or you can buy the parts and make your own. Some guys use fuel logs or even chrome plated tubing that is preformed to feed into double pumpers. I gues it's a matter of preference, but I like the look of the braided stainless and the blue and red anodized AN fittings. Additionally, I believe that the braided stainless is stronger. |
I used that opening for my temp sensor and plugged the other.
BTW...the pluged opening is a great place to fill the block with coolant to save burping time. The best plugs are anodized red/blue/polished or stainless from any race shop. the have a hex head and will screw flush to the intake for the look. The threads are typical plumbing threads however. The water pump can be plugged using rubber caps available at any auto parts in the "help" section but the best thing to do is thread that spout and install another anodized fitting with paste sealant. If pump is off it's a 10 minute job. The thread tapping can be done with the pump on if it is packed properly below. |
Makes great spot for a temp sensor for your electric fan. Just like on new cars you can install a relay and hook one wire to the temp sensor. When it hits its preset temp, say 212 the cooling fan kicks on by it's self.

I've got another dumb question.
What size NPT is the opening in the manifold for the tempt sensor ? The smaller of the two. |

I know the one for my heater (pass. side,larger) is 1/2" npt.I still have the package the heater hose nipple came in.
The one on the driver's side is smaller. 3/8" npt ??? :confused: Oh,I have a Victor Jr. on a 418w. |

It's 1/4 pipe isn't it? Goes 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 if my poor old brain is still working. Hell I do not remember. I will go in tomorrow and check the intake on the 351w in the shop. Sorry end of the day brain freeze. I'll post my findings in the morning. |

Sorry I lost this link. It is 3/8 pipe on the small hole and 1/2 pipe for the heater outlet.

Instead of a plug I installed a petcock so I can bleed the cooling system.
