8.8 differential problem solved
From day one I have had a “howl” coming from the differential. This was a used unit that I completely rebuilt with new 3.73 gears, new axles, bearings...etc. A friend of mine who drag races and owns a gas station did the gear assembly and set up. I bought a chrome cover from one of the racing parts catalogs and without thinking installed the it figuring that all the covers are the same....WRONG!
The problem is that the aftermarket cover is not designed for the shorter (larger diameter ring gear) gears and the ring gear made contact with the cover causing the “howl”. I had to get a cover from a 4x4 that had the shorter gears.
Bottom line: I know this is elementary but, If you are changing rear end gears check the cover for ring gear clearance!
