Going to use bedliner for spats.
Hey Everyone,
I'm going to use spray on bedliner for my rear fender spats. My Cobra has 700 miles on it and 14 chips in the rear fenders. This of course is mostly my fault, I went with the stone chucking Goodyears :p. Who has done this and can give me some advice? If you have pictures can you please post them. :D --Mike |
Clear film spats
After getting a few rock chips on my rear fenders I installed the 3M clear film. I wanted the protection but not the color. It was a VERY easy and inexpensive (FREE) install and you have to look closely to even see them.
I just went to a Clear Bra Dealer and asked for any leftover material. They had plenty! Took about 30 minutes to cut to shape and install! Terry |
When I bought my car, the paint had numerous chips due to huge Hoosier tires and a lot of track time. I masked off the spat area and sprayed it with black bed liner from a rattle can. The size and shape of the area was defined by the chips. A couple of coats made it look a lot better. The bed liner also held up well against additional chips and could be touched up with little effort.
I don't recommend this approach for car show guys, but if its already looking bad and you're a driver more than a waxer, give it a try. |
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies. I definitly want black spats not clear. I have too many chips as it is. Tommy, Do you have any pictures? :D --Mike |
I had the local Line-X dealer offer to do mine. Haven't decided.

After about 20,000 miles my rear fenders were pretty beatup. I bought a spray can of rocker panel protetor that was sapposed to be clear. It dried milky white. Very ugly. I then sprayed over it with black and the spats look fine. If I ever repaint the car I'll go with the clear 3M film but until then I'll live with the spats.
Sorry , No pics. Harvey R. |
I saw an idea last year at a car show. I man with a corvette had clear plexiglass mud flaps that were removable. If you look in my gallery at the blue B&B cobra on the second page you will see them on my old car. They are almost invisable!

This came up a while back. Greg Kulp, that's his CC name also, sent me a picture of his ERA 289 FIA with bedliner for spats.
Being a Cobra pack rat I saved it. **) http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...eg_s_spats.jpg I would be interested to know what you end up doing. Keep us posted. -John |
I used the carbon fiber from Factory Five and they have worked well. You can see them on their web site.

Hey Bruce, do the Factory Five's fit the Lone Star ????

Are the static cling fender protectors are worth anything?
|
I have a question,
Has anyone ever tried using a leather spat? I was thinking of having a button on the inside of the fender and another one inside the cockpit. Also use a piece of nylon plastic for the flared edge. This way it is removeable and looks like a bra. |
Static Cling Fender Protectors

LACOBRA65,
I made some fender protectors for my BDR. I used static cling limo tint from the local auto parts store. I had a few chips on my fenders and I touched them up before applying the film. I used the little squeege that was supplied with the tint and some water with a few drops of liquid dish soap in a spray bottle to apply. Make yourself a template out of paper then transfer to the film and cut it out. Takes a little time to get all the bubbles out and to stretch the film around the curves. So far they have worked fine and it was an inexpensive experiment that seems to be doing the job. They have been on for about 300 miles. And they can be removed. |

Wow,
Thanks for all of the input guys. I think I will go the bedliner route. I like the idea of the 3M clear, but my fenders are too nicked up. As for the leather spats, I like the idea, but they don't look right for my competition styling. The static cling idea is a good one, but has the problem of getting wet or flying off, which I learned over and over with my static graphics. I also wonder if the cling will get damaged by larger rocks. Guys running Bias Ply race tires know what I mean. I don't know if the spray bed liner is my final solution, but it will work for now. I ran some tests on a piece of aluminium and I was very pleased. The spray I have dries rough, but not as rough as the spats in John's picture. I will keep you all informed and of course post pictures when I'm done. :D --Mike |
Hold that can!
Mj,
FWIW, I have applied an adhesive backed, vinyl sheet chip guard used as OEM on Porsche 930's. It has a very fine textured, satin black surface. It cleans easily and has great sheen with any non-silicone rubber dressing. I use 303. It's easy to trim a Cobra compatible shape within the 930 shape and handles the compound curves well. Mine has been on for 13 years. Looks brand new and I throw Hoosier stones at it. Maybe the only downside is you can get about 14" up from the bottom edge -about half your door height. It's available form Performance Products and they're at automotion.com Good luck, |
Film Guy
I do not know how bad the chips are but the 3M, Venture or Avery product are good at hiding. Try to touch up the chips first and apply some of the film over it. The adhesive is thick as well as the film. You would be surprised how well this film hides chips and scratches. It's tough stuff. Ask a local installer for tips. Or ask me.
:p |
FUNFER2 - Yes with a little trimming the Factory Five fit perfectly. I have had them on for several months now and they are very secure and do the job.

Anyone see at the spats on the yellow Classic roadster on the home page of Cobracountry.com they look nice from what I can see I think I will call them and see if they would fit my car..

How are they attached & what's the cost ?
Thanks Bruce ! Kev |
