Default Bellhousing alignment dial indicator question

Hey guys,
I need to do a bellhousing alignment on my fe and was wondering where you purchased your dial indicators and if there is anything additional I would need to mount the dial indicator. I have a sears unit but have no clue as to how to mount the thing. I was loking in the Ford racing catalog (2004) page 117 and it looks like a shaft attached to the pilot hole and the dial indicator attached to it. Any help I would appreciate, Sal.

Hi Sal,

You don't need any special kind of mounting. I just use the regular magnetic base for my dial indicator and attach it to the face of the flywheel. You can adjust the arm around so the dial indicator sits in the center of the hole up against the edge.

Cheers

No matter how I tried, I couldn't get the magnetic base of mine to mount right. It just wouldn't fit right. I finally took the magnetic base off and fabricated an L bracket out of some steel. I mounted the L bracket to one of the flywheel bolts and then mounted the dial indicator to the bracket. It worked like a charm.

First of all it does not have to be in the center, the magbase will travel in a concentric cirlce no matter where it is on the flywheel "also the flywheel does not even have to be there" you are true'ing the bellhousing to the pilot bearing on the crankshaft. The only thing the flywheel would do for you is give you a bigger spot to mount the magbase. No matter where you put the magbase as long as you have room for the dial indicator it will give you a true circle.
