Default california smog

I built a FFR kit using a 1988 5.0 motor. Everything went well until by bar appointment. He would not even test the car. All the smog and emmisssions were put back and ffr cats were put in. They would not test the car because the reverse headers and no pre cats violate the rules.

My options are to get a sb100 permit jan 2nd - I hear the line forms on Jan 1st at midnight - only 500 are given

or buy a 1965 289 block and start an engine rebuild.

so does anyone know how much of the 302 parts I can reuse?

I've spoken with him. He's in Arizona but offered to drive it up while on a trip up here. You could PM him and see if he still has it.

thanks - the 5.0 motor has trick flow, intake,cam and heads - should be 360 hp - if i can get the 289 i can get past smog nightmare and start driving

sorry - the right header from the doner and is mounted on the left and vice versa. So to fit the 5.0 motor in the car the header flow is reversed and the exhaust exits the engine front. I used mac headers and it sounds and runs SWEET - but Ca BAR will not accept them- and the 88 mustang had pre cats that the ffr build kit does not have. Logic would say that makes no difference but the firing order change may make them a little less efficent.

Ah ok.. Can I ask what BAR station this was? I have a 69 351W block so I am hoping I won't have too much trouble when I get to that stage..

Talking it was chafe college in rancho

I thought i read the regs and put all the 88 engine controls and computer. The dmv website says engine swap must meet the polution controls and emmissions of the engine age. Silly - I did not think about the exhaust direction.

The BAR ruling is the exhaust direction and lay out are part of the polution control system. I verified this with the BAR tec hotline in the riverside field office and the sacromento number.

The other issue is the ffr kit did not come with a ca carb number or certificate with the cats. So they may not have passed it - even if direction is not an issue

go figgure - the goal is reduced emmissions and logic would tell you that a vehicle with cats - smog pump - engine controls would polute less than a carb only straight pipe - but this is the govt we are dealing with.

Get the sp100 number and all those problems go away. The DMV, CHP and BAR roll out the red carpet when you do. And you won't have to re-smog it every couple years. Good luck!!

The rule is if the 88 mustang had it you need it. That includes pre-cats and exhaust manifolds. If there is a carb legal header system for the mustang that will fit the car then it should be able to be used.

whyant,

Just wait until January 2007 and get an SB100 exemption. Alot easier and no more smog checks forever. Check this site for paperwork (search SB100)to be filled out in advance. Do this first, get and appointment and be there on January 1.

I did the SB100 deal when I registered my SPF equipped with a 1974 351W block, in Jan. 2, 2004. I was at the door of the DMV - first one - at 6:00 am with my coffee, chair and newspaper. Wound up with SB 100 #038. No problems at the BAR smog sniffer or Highway Patrol.
