Default Shell Rotella Oil & Cam Failure

A few months+ ago there was a Thread , I could not find with Search , regarding the failure of cam lobes due to the newer/modern engine oils not having all the additives necessary for the cam break in time period. Mentioned was the use of special lube for coating the entire cam and pouring over the lifter gallery and lifters, such as that sold by Comp Cam, ( Camshaft Break In Lube Part # 159 ) to be used when installing new cams. The cam failures were occuring even with the correct pre-lube of the cam lobes .

A mechanic mentioned that Shell Rotella multigrade 15W-40 oil contains the additives necessary to prevent the cam lobe failure.

While the oil is primarily intended for heavy duty diesel truck use, it is also mentioned the oil is appropriate for gasoline engines. COSTCO sells by the case, $46.99 for 6 one gallon containers.

Has anyone used the Rotella product ( s ) and any opinions regarding use for preventing cam failures ?

Default Oil

Hi,
I use crane cam lube only,a thick black paste,it has never hurt a cam.
Also I run 1/2 pennzoil 10/30 and 1/2 Shell rotella 15/40 for the additives. Has worked great for me.
Perry.

Try looking around here;

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

More good info here on oil than any other place that I've found.

Steve, thanks for the link. I agree, has to be the best site regarding Oil that I have seen, more rainy day reading.

I will definitely share w/ the mechanic that mentioned Shell Rotella and post a Thread on the Corvette Forum as oil/lube selection is a common topic. For the Corvette Z06, GM/Chevrolet recommends only the use of Mobil 1 synthetic oil and I always wondered what, if any, the arrangement was between the two companies. To the extent, the oil recoomendation is labeled on the oil filler cap.
