If you check the MSD guide for the 6AL ignition they talk about it on page 8. You can see it here: http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/6%20series/6series.pdf
and it's a diode not a resistor. The point is to only allow voltage to flow one direction so you don't experience run-on after turning off the key. It's a 100V/1A Diode.
