British wire wheels in Fresno sells all sorts of products for wire wheels including lead hammers as well as cooper/lead (which they do not reccommend!) I bought a lead hammer years ago for my Morgan and it is still in good shape. If anyone has chrome wheels the chrome wheel cleaner they sell is fantastic- my 20 plus year old chrome wire whells look as good as new.
the also sell anti seize spline grease.

I've bought a few Lead hammers through the Australian agent for Dayton Wire wheels. There should be plenty of stockists in the US that should be able so get one in for you.

I use a 2X4 of wood and a big iron hammer.
I see this is an OLD thread, but the information is still good.

Hi Ron,
Harbor Freight used to carry one with a fiberglass handle, seems like they can only be bought out of California now.
Here is a link to a 2 lb. brass hammer and then there is a selection of neon dead blows in different weights.

I bought the finishline piece and machined a 3/4 in. head on it so that I can use a breaker bar and we have some tools that the BACC guys have made over the years that really work well. I will post a picture of the tool later today.

I ordered my lead hammer from Finish Line I believe it was. I have only used it a time or two, but wrapped with an old basketball sock it worked great.

Boy this brings back memories. I didn't have a lead hammer so I used a claw hammer....broke all three ears off. Then I realized I was beating the wrong way....took me over a month to get one wheel off. Lesson learned.

Kirkham recomends using a nylon faced 4lb hammer, the nylon holds up better than the lead.
Considering it's a daily thing for them they'd know what lasts longest.
Of course I found this out after buying a lead hammer...

Almost any industrial supply house should have them. There are two styles one has screw-in tips and the other is called a "split head" that has different puck style faces like leather that clamp into the head. This style has a large nut on the top to clamp the faces in.
I heard people mention not to use dead-blow hammers, but I don't know what problem they cause.
