Headlight Stone Guards

Gents,
Can anyone post some pic's of how they installed headlight stone guards. I bought a pair from Finishline and would like to see how others have done this. A picture is worth a 1000 words.

Remove the chrome headlight trim ring. There should be three screws that hold the headlight mounting bracket into the headlight bucket. 1 at 12, 4 and 8 o'clock. With the stone guards should have come 2 sets of springy flat tabs (I don't know what they would be really called.)with a 90 deg turn on the back side and a slot or screw hole. These mount under those headlight screws. Remount the headlight trim ring and then slide the guards over the ends of the tabs. They are specially bent to hold the guards.

When I said there were two sets, I meant two sets of six, three for each light. One set is longer than the other to accomodate different curvatures of the headlight. Also, some trim rings are tighter aganst the headlight than others and you may have a small clearance problem.

This is how mine are mounted:



I put the clips between the outside and inside ring on my factory five. The clips push out on the guards. Been on for about 2000 miles.They are the ones from finishline.

Thanks again for the pic it helps alot. I guess if you can't get the real stuff then second best is ok. Besides its how you want your car to look anyway. I'd be happy with it lookin like yours do Jim. By the way your car looks awesome in your galley.

Jim, I cant see your picture, all I have is a red X. i just got the finishline ones and they are driving me crazy tying to figure it out. Could you possibly re-post your pics, or pm me. I could give you my email so you could send me a pic ore two. I would appreciate it.

Hi Ron,
I went through the same dilemma as yourself. After 3 frustrated calls to Enzo, I've learned these guards are a "one size fits all" application and "some application engineering" is required.
What that meant to me was, you've got the basics, figure out the rest.
Your kit comes with 6 long stem mounts and 6 short stem mounts. Pick out which 3-per-light will work best on your car. Because of the depth my mounting screws were from my finish ring, I used the longer ones. The shorter ones were discarded.

Pic "Covers 1" shows my mounts were at 10, 2 and 7 o'clock. There's another one under there at 5 o'clock, but there's only 3 mounts, so there we are.
Pic "Covers 2" show how I (using needlenose pliers) altered the wrap of the mount and the guard. I bent the whole assembly to go under the guard, then wrap out over and back to hold the guard in place.
The guards come with a pre-bent "hook" of sorts, but under no combination of mounting them inward or outward would they actually fit or hold anything.
Pic "Covers 3" shows the finished mount wrapped out over the guard from the inside.
I've had these for over a year, trying to figure out how they're really supposed to work. After seeing 10 or so installations of this exact same product, the answer is, there is no answer. Rig it to the best of your ability and move on.
I've also seen several who have safety wired them to the mounts after they're done.

I have always liked the look. I had them on my Triumph GT-6 for a bit. I live in California so one night a CHP officer had nothing to do and cited me for them.

I may try them again now that I see them again.........

I mounted black ones on my car. Couldn't stand the big clips and the way they stuck out and away from the lamp. I removed the trim ring, and at the three screws holding the retaining ring, wrapped SS Safty wire and installed the trim ring. Then used the wire pliars to tie the baskets in place. Looks great and no big brkts. I'll look for pics... Check my gallery.

Did the same thing...the clips wouldn't work on my SPF, although they worked on a Mini Cooper I have. I think it has something to do with the kind of trim ring used on the headlights. I used safety wire and if done neatly, actually looks quite good.

I have since updated mine to A-Snakes original style. I can't post pics as the gallery is tooooo fullllll.

PM with email address if you want pics. I added the side brackets however I opted to use ss bolts on the attachment point which had less of a Frankenstien look to them. I think it came out great! I am biased.......

Nick Acton sells the correct thumb screw type.
I`ve tried both ....you get what you pay for.
