electric exhaust cutouts
I was tossing the idea around of installing exhaust cutouts on my 13 year old finished Unique Cobra. Does anbody know how much of a Hassle it would be to install these in between the header flandge and sidepipe flandge

David, are you trying to make a quiet Cobra louder 'on demand', or do you have local noise abatement ordinances that you are trying to work around for passing vehicle inspections in lieu of just replacing the side mufflers with a more free-flowing (i.e. louder) set? Are your header-into-sidepipe flanges 1 pipe into 1 pipe, 4 pipes into 4 pipes, or 4 pipes into 1 pipe? Makes a considerable difference to your available options and what might work for you.

Unless you decide to go with a hidden under-car exhaust, I doubt there is enough room to add a T shaped spacer that has the cutout mechanism, and the tubing to route the exhaust away from the engine compartment.
Just do a Google search on "electric exhaust cutout" and look at the different kits. Then take a look at the small confined space where the header bolts to the side exhaust.

Yes, I want to make a healthy sounding Cobra sound super healthy on Demand...I have 4 into 4 pipes.
i figure I would be cutting a section out of the 4 pipes, then reweld the flange on

Be sure that your state law allows them. Here it is illegal to have cut outs on unless you have the opening covered with bolts that you have to get out and manually remove.

Davids2toys David this is the only number I could find for Norman Gray. 561-615-1052. The other place would be the Mustang racing forum. He was at VIR last year with his cobra. Didn't have time to talk to him. Rick L.

They started giving tickets and impounding cars up here back in the early 60s if you had cut outs on and didn't have them the way I said. They ever refused to let a guy with his 57 Chevy that brought it down here for the big April car show start it to drive it because he had his with a way to open them from inside the car. He had to wait until all cars had left and then bring his trailer over and winch the car in. Talk about crap!!

With a chop saw, or sawsall, and a welder you can shorten the cutout, and weld it into place. Not much space is needed. I have done this probably a dozen times this past year.

It can be done
davids2toys David call Stormin Norman and see if he can send you a picture of his setup. He has the sidepipes and under car exhaust to the back of the car. They now have oval tubing to give higher ground clearance. It's a nice setup for a cobra. Rick L.

Who is stormin Norman, how do I get his #?
I have no interest in going to the back of the car though, I want to come off the flange, run the new pipe right under the drivers side floor and dump right next to the sidepipe entry, to the inside where you cant see it...it will give the illusion of the sidepipes making all that beautiful noise!!! |
