Default New alternator not charging

I need some feedback. My alt isn't charging. I tested and replaced the unit with a newly rebuilt unit (it tested good), but it still isn't charging. The connections are good. When I remove the neg battery cable when running, the engine shuts off. The ammeter shows slight discharge. Any ideas?

Default charging ?

how far is the battery from the alternator? what ignition are you using?
could be anything based on the info given. need a little more insight as to what the systems are composed of. is the alt a one wire? is it old ford with a external
regulator? what size pulley is on the unit?

Battery is under hood/fender on the same side as the alternator. MSD ready-to-run distributor, Blaster coil. Early Ford alternator (three wire + ground) w/separate voltage regulator. Alternator is the same model/type from a '66 Ford 428 Galaxie, which the engine came from. Stock pulleys.

See here for troubleshooting.

Does your red warning light come on with the ignition?

Default alt

how did you determine its not charging? meter at the alt? if its a 45 amp alt
the msd might be sucking the juice. the new alternator, it was put on because
of what condition? is there a history of it ever working or is this a new build
or an upgrade?

Newly built car. The first alt (rebuilt) tested NG. Ammeter showed slight discharge. The second bench tested good. Still shuts off when neg battery cable is disconnected while engine is running. Still shows slight discharge. Voltage regulator is new.

Tell me about not using the stator terminal...the build book doesn't mention this.
The terminal IS connected to the wire (behind the alt.).

In order for the system to work, the warning light must work. It gets power together with the rest of the gauges, so if the gas gauge works, that initial part of the system is OK.

Do you have a wiring diagram? If not, e-mail me.

Ignore FWB's mail. He thinks that the late ERA system is the same as his. It isn't. You have the second system shown in the troubleshooting guide.

I did not read everything in this thread, but do you have excite voltage to the regulator?

No excite, no voltage from the alternator.

Check my pictures/gallery and get the wiring disgram.

Thanks FWB, I got a diagram from TRULARIN's gallery. I also stopped by ERA this afternoon and spoke with Doug. I think he steered me in the right direction.

Bob, the ign warning light does NOT work with the key on. However, there is power to the light. There is no power to the G/R wire going to the voltage reg. with the key on. Is the ign. light a fused connection?
