Exhaust

I know there have been many threads about this subject, but need advise.
Running along and rock flys up and chipped my exhaust which is ceramic coated. Starting to rust and was thinking of just going with black side pipes.
Question > special paint? Do they need to be completely stripped first or will a good scuffing be good. Have always liked the black exhaust look and figure good time to try.

it's easy to touch up with hi temp silver paint. I broke a sidepipe mount back in June of 2004. A local muffler shop repair it and touched it up with hi-temp silver. It's on the back side of the pipe so you can not see it but it still looks good after 10,000 miles.
