Separating Two Siliconed Pieces
Hi all. I have a cast expansion tank where the top and bottom are siliconed together and I need to separate the two. The silicone is "super stuck" and I don't want to try driving a wedge between the two for fear of damaging one or the other. I tried heating with a propane torch, but that didn't make a difference. If anybody has any ideas I sure would be grateful.

Go to the paint store and get a wooden-handled, flat blade scraper, 2" wide or less. Sharpen the edge to a knife point on a stone and work it into the seam. Then push it all around the circumference.
It's my favorite gasket tool.

Rick,
Silicone HATES gasoline......so in a safe place outside just soak it in gas and in will start hollerin' in a matter of minutes........peels off like bad tape!!

Try monofilament fishing line and use it like a bandsaw blade to saw the RTV between the parts

You still have to get it off of the two pieces so a petroleum solvent will still have to be used....kerosene might even work but gasoline is very fast!! 
I removed 30 feet of "silicone seam" from the gunwale of my boat with gasoline....piece of cake!!  |
