Default Different Billboard Tire paint

I know there has been much talk about what type and brand of paint for the Billboard's. I do have a can of "Ranger" white wall paint. The question I've had for a long time, isn't there some type of adhesion promoter for rubber. After web searching, I found this company.

Ranger is water based.
This company is oil based.

We all know that oil based paint lasts a lot longer, like my garden fence for instance, I painted it almost 15 years ago and although it needs to be freshened up, the paint has held up all these years.

So my question is, would this tire oil based paint be much better and last longer ?
The company said that their paint is flexible, unlike water based products.

This paint is very,......expensive.

Here is what they recommend.

1- adhesion promoter/ sealant.
2- base coat (dull finish)
3- if you want a gloss finish, use their top coat.

They also said that many business's around the country use this product, because it lasts longer than other paint products. She said with a lot of driving under harsh conditions, will last a year.

You can not use tire dressing on the paint. So far, most here on CC have not tested paint longevity like Ranger, for a extended period of time to see how well paint works on tires.

For those of us who like the nice white paint over the spray painted original looks, this is a lot of money for making Billboards shine, but is it worth trying ?

If we could get a few guys together and split the cost, it wouldn't be so bad. $60 bucks for 3 of us. The Ranger i bought is 9 bucks ! lol
But, if it works very well and lasts over a year, it may be worth it. I would like to find someone that has used this product. Some here have used the Ranger paint with good and bad results, but not near as expensive.

Most of the time, you get what you pay for.

For those that don't like the pretty white paint versus the old school lightly sprayed paint, I'll ask you to please be kind here and not bash this thread. This is just a friendly discussion.

I gave up - used the Ranger Paint - didn't look good to me - took it all off.

Here's the deal - Cobra's are fine looking cars, either relatively expensive or just plain expensive depending on parts and who does what. Painting the letters on tires - a task that ends up with clear signs that that is what you did, doesn't seem aligned with owning a Cobra. It just looks cheap. On the other hand, someone posted that they used an air brush to complete the job - now, I'm thinking that that could be the answer, in addition to the right paint.

So, my 2 cents is to look for the best way to apply the paint as well as the right paint or just forget about it as the Billboards have a great look even without white lettering - although I agree that they look the best with white lettering, just not hand painted (with a brush) white lettering.

By the way, the Ranger paint comes off in sheets - doesn't stick like other paints - either I didn't prepare the tires properly or that's the way it is. Therefore, if one tries to touch up a little section, one ends up with a much bigger section to be concerned about - life is just too short for those kind of hassles and a cheap look as the result.

Maybe using an air brush is the way to go ?
I don't have one and have never used one, does anyone have some tips and advise ?

If you paint outside the lines, (like mama tought me) if you have a rag and Q-tip ready with some paint thinner, I could just wipe the un-wanted off. Think this would work ?

I bet the quality control inspector at the GY plant is really proud of their work.

Interesting that all of the newer GY racing tires (i.e. drag and circle track) have near perfect lettering from the factory. The factory paint on our Billboards looks like a 2nd grader applied it...and then people wonder why our country has lost its edge?!?

Kev, I realize you're looking for a more durable (i.e. non-water based) tire paint. But I think the Ranger stuff is quite up to the task and a little patina on them after a while may actually look pretty good. Fred K. posted an excellent "procedure" for applying it properly (thinning the coats as you go so that you get better flow). The patient painter gets the best results. And an air brush would make it look better (a subject that I know very little about, other than for $100 you can get a decent enough set-up).

I'm a bit of a perfectionist so, I know if any of these paint products don't give me satisfaction, I'll be really pissed.
I do believe the air brush would lay down better and I think, one of my buds has a air brush so I'll check with him first before buying one.

Talking with the sales lady, since their products are expensive, she actually said to use the promoter then use the Ranger paint. Pretty cool of her !

I agree with GY, they don't give a crap. Even my rear GY Eagle II's are brown and yellow. Too bad the Billboards aren't RAISED, lettering. That would be ,as my neice says, much more better !

Same here. Yes, they are "racing" tires to begin with, but you would think the factory could put a little more pride in their work?!?

Rubber sticks best to rubber...

Pick up a jar of rubber cement and a tube of white artist's paint (oil based), mix the two. You now have white rubber paint for about $8.

Silicone caulk would also work, thin with naphta or mineral spirits.
