DcDoug: Cars like the Veyrons etc...are already priced in the stratosphere just imagine if they attain collectibility status! But I can see your point.

Ford GT.

They are like silver quarters. Even though they are relatively small numbers, there were still quite a few made. Few will survive because their owners tend to underestimate the car. (I'm learning Cobras can have that same attribute. Fortunately I've learned.)

Well, the Ford GT IS already a collectors item, & I don't think they will ever be cheap - anybody that owns one pampers it, so 95% of them will remain low milers & hangar queens.

I also think the new Challenger R'T's & SRT's will be collectors items if kept in low mileage & excellent condition. I would venture to say the Dodge Boys will not be making them in a year, so what is out there will be it, & there's not many of them out there. I think Chrysler Corp. will be OOB in a year - the indicators are there.

Rare Iron: There are three camps of Ford GT owners I have seen emerge.

1. Those that buy delivery mile cars, keep them in the wrapper and wait.
2. Those that buy them, drive fairly limited miles and pamper them.
3. Those that buy them, drive them hard and frequently and put them away wet. Point in case, a friend of mine has an '06 FGT with over 50k miles with plenty miles put on at Lime Rock, Watkins Glenn and Pocano and VIR. Many guys have put whipples on and some have put the Heffner Twin Turbo bringing the car to 1100 hp.

Attrition seems fairly high as there are definitely many guys that get in over their head with the car not realizing that its mid engined design makes it an easy car to drive aggressively forgetting it has no handling electrical handling nannies. You are on your own and the car will bite and bite hard. They are viciously fast cars and you better be ready and know what you are doing.

But I agree, they are future classics/collectible if not already.

The article I read focused on two main factors, initial desireability and limited production.

I have noticed that alot of the 60's muscle cars that are now collectible and worth many times their intial window sticker were in many cases manufactured in numbers between 50 examples for such as for example the uber valuable Copo Z28s or Yenko Camoaros, Yenko Chevelles, Hemi Cudas up to the 20,000 or so examples of GTOs, Chevelles, and everything else in between. So it seems that "desirability" even in the face of what most would consider not really limited production figures or more acturatlely fairly high production numbers can still create a "collectible".

Far as I know that copper bodied cobra is still sitting in N.C. at Racetorations.

Tough to beat "only one in the world!".

The 1995-1998 are the model years of the 993's (last air-cooled models), but the 1998 is considered the most sought after, relatively speaking, of course.

Well, there's always the Camaro IROC-Z's of the late 80's as well as the Firebird TransAm with the Buick GN engine, like 1989.

I dabble a little in Porsche's too. Prices remain strong in the "modern classic" Porsche market.

IMHO, I see the lines between "collectible" and "enjoyable" really being blurred here.

A numbers matching '67 427/435 'Vette Roadster is collectible and enjoyable. The same car with non-numbers matching and (we all see this), "1 of only 213 with the red interior option" (BFD!) doesn't make the car necessarily collectible (given the rest of its condition), but still enjoyable.

I always wanted an '86 IROC. Not collectible unless it's ultra low miles and prestine. Mostly enjoyable though. Thus, it's desired.

Of course, a Bugatti Veryon easily passes both tests. Exclusiveness and collectibility are often compatable bed partners, too.

I need to get a bigger garage.

Over the top.

For me the best garage is the one that you either can't see from the street, or is the least obvious. But very accessible from the house.

Back on topic. Going back beyond the 10 year horizon, how about a well preserved DeLorean? Or ANY Countach?
