I had mine done last summer at Evergreen. They didn't bother hooking it up to anything. They did a visual, made sure I had a pcv, didn't care about my open breather on the other side. They took some pictures, clicked n/a in about every field of my "test" and printed out a sticker.

The evergreen boys freaked out a little bit about my EFI, but they too asked to see my PCV. it was in the tradtional ford spot for an EFI.

They sniffed me, printed a sticker and sent me on my way.

Default Any Pics??

I understand the closed PCV system, as I had one on my Boss 302, but if you are running an "open" air cleaner, is it possible to close the PCV loop??

Duplcate that on the 289 Hipo. From PCV from rear of RH valve cover into base of carb or manifold runner. Then from front of LH valve cover closed breather into base of open element air filter assy. Clean and functional. However for current year smog regs you may be required to have closed housing.

Gotcha. Mine is run from the RH into the manifold itself. So I just need to tap the bottom of the aircleaner and hook it up, right? Thanks again.

Just passed SB100 BAR Smog at Golden West College in Huntington Beach last week. They were definitely looking for the "closed loop" set up. My 351W based 408 stroker passed with flying colors! Ran PCV in the passenger valve cover with a hose connection to the back of the carb base. Ran a closed breather on the drive side valve cover with a heater hose (you read right) connection to the base of my Kragen Special open air cleaner. I just made sure to wipe off the heater hose markings on the hose and I had no problems using a heater hose. Also, they did not test my car on the dyno. They strictly performed the visual inspection. No more and no less.

I heard rumors that many guys immediately remove the driver side hose connection and replace the closed valve cover breather with an open breather the second they get home. Of course they leave the PCV valve in place because it serves a useful purpose coupled with the open breather. 'Course I'd never do something so illegal as that....

Ok. Now you've confused me again. What would be the difference with the driver's side valve cover switching it back to an open system? I don't need to worry about emissions testing, just looking for the best setup.

With the drivers side open you simply have a shiny, chrome breather cap (that is open underneath allowing air to be sucked in) sitting on the valve cover as opposed to a shiny chrome breather cap (closed underneath such that no air can be pulled in other then through the hose connection) with an ugly black hose running to your air cleaner assembly.
