Question for Roush 427R owners

I currently have a Roush427R with the T/W cam. I am seriously considering upgrading to a 427R cam and perhaps a single plane manifold and 830cfm carb

My current set up consisit of the 427SR, Tremec 600 with 3:44 gears. Car is mostly pleasure and canyon running.

How does the 427R perform on the bottom end, and at what point do you not have cam surge?

Any response greatly appreciated.

I would highly advise not changing. My SPF Daytona had the 427R and it was a pain to drive in the city. It stumbled in traffic and did not like anything but WOT. My GT40 MK11 had the 427SR and was much easier to drive daily. I really could tell little difference at WOT from the 427r

427r

I have the same engine as you and I don't see a kick in the pants with your improvements. Mine has been rebuilt once by Roush and I'd be happy if it used one quart per k. I got as far as 9k with the 1st motor and pushing 3k on this one. One quart per 500 hurts. Sorry about the rant. See what others say.

Well my oil cpnsumpton is about the same

Don't do it, from your driving description you want torque, if anything buy a torque cam. I thought the cams were the same, it was the manifold and carb that made the difference

Hey, Varmit, I live just down the hill from you. Here's what I did to mine: If you really want to see and feel a difference, ditch the Street Avenger carb for a good DP (I bought an 830cfm ProSystems) and then ditch the restrictive 1 3/4 inch sidepipes for a pair of 3 inchers. Now that engine can breathe!

Made my 427SRTW engine (and my wife) scream! If you want to see and hear mine, let me know, we regularly go into Escondido for lunch. Could meet you there.

PS. You will need to wear a good pair of earplugs!

And you learn to live with the oil consumption!

That's the carb I was thinking of going with. Would love to hear and talk to you about it. We go to the Outback in Poway Wed nights at 4 if you want to stop by

Hello Jim,
How's your oil consumption? Just hope 7 and 8 isn't scored again. 209

So far after 11,000 miles, about one quart per 1000 miles.

I also have a Roush 427r and found a stumble around 2000 RPMs. I went with PRO SYSTEMS CARB and they set me up with their carb, the car has been great no more stumble. Talk to Pat he kows all the specs for the roush 427r

Varmit,
The SR engines are favored over the R versions by people very familiar with Roushs, like Lance Stander and Erick Voss.
When I was talking engines with them, they both suggested the SR version of the FE (99% street driving).
I went from a 402R in a SPF to a 468SRFE in my Kirkham, so the effect of torque was compounded a couple times (SB to BB, bigger displacement, lighter car) but still, the motor is very streetable and strong as a bull. But it doesn't have the legs of an R. I guess it depends on how often and how long you stay above 5.5k RPM.

I've been talking with Erik Voss, he actually suggested a solid lifter cam, but think I will shy away from that. If the surge can be tuned out, may consider it. Looking to get upto about 560-570 tq, and whatever with the hp!!

Guess I won't complain. I get 1200-1500 miles/qt. Sounds like oil consumption goes along with strokers? My 427SR saw the biggest improvement with a 750dp Quick Fuel Carb. The adjustability of the Quick Fuel is better than a Holley especially if you do some A/F monitoring to tune it in.

For all the guys with Roush motors that have changed from the Street Avenger vacuum secondary carbs to mechanical secondary carbs, that is just the first step in improving the breathing of these engines.

You will find a whole bunch more horsepuppies if you then replace the restrictive sidepipes with ones that allow the motor to exhale properly. My stock SPF sidepipes measured about 1 3/4 inches on the inside baffle. My new ones are 3 inches. Slide a mirror inside yours and you will see how restrictive the stock ones really are.

They need to inhale and exhale properly. Just replacing the carb is only half the fix!

bobbymac 03-14-2012 11:12 AM

What make of sidepipes and where did you get them?

blykins 03-14-2012 02:05 PM

+ 1 on the carb....

I supply custom Quick Fuel carbs to a lot of Roush customers....both state-side and overseas. All of them have replied with the same line.... "Oh my goodness, what an improvement..."

Varmit 03-14-2012 04:29 PM

Well I want to pick up some ponies and torque, so I am totally open to suggestions. Looks like the 8 stack set up will be about 10k total out the door, the R cam may be unsuitable for the street. so........

I don't remember the shop's name. They are out of Reno or Sparks Nevada. They shipped me a modified pair and I shipped them back mine. I looked into Cobra Pacs and Stainless Specialties and they all had good products. However the ones I got were basically an exchange plus labor.

He (I think his name was Steve) takes your old pipes, replaces the muffler baffles, re welds them and then has them ceramic coated. Then he swaps them with the next guy. You only pay for the labor and shipping costs. Cheaper than spending $2500 for a new set. I think it was about $1200.

blykins 03-14-2012 07:38 PM

Carb.....$650.
