Be sure the outer surface is clean, wipe it with brake clean or lacquer thinner OR apply it to thouroughly dry freshly painted surface. I have a Mr Gasket one that has been on several years. The ends on my application may be slightly overlapped as well.

I used a little 3M weatherstrip adhesive back in the day.
