427 headed back to FRP
Lost a roller on #3 exhaust valve, wiped out the lobe as well. So far FRP has been extremely cooperative, sending me a cradle and paying to ship it back to the factory for inspection. Hoping for the best.

That sux but I hope they continue to treat you well. How about some more particulars on the engine? Mileage etc?

Wow, and on an aluminum block engine. Any other damage or are you leaving it put together for Ford to figure out? Sorry it happened, but glad they are taking care of you.

Only has 2300 miles. Solid roller set up, was cruising @ 2200 RPM's running like a dream then a bad sound, backfire and shut down. Pulled valve cover to find #3 rocker down a little too far. Pulled the intake, removed the #3 lifters to find the roller had fallen off of the #3 exhaust lifter. The cam lobe then was hitting the "ears" of the lifter where the roller should have been and took a beating. I'm sure all of that metal went somewhere so I am leaving it to Ford to look at. Lash was good on both sides of all other valves and the motor has only seen the rev limiter work once or twice (set @ 6000 RPM). I don't race or abuse the car at all. The Ford engineer said they have not seen this before, the motor has extremely high quality parts-there was no "skimping" from that standpoint. Maybe a machining or assembly issue who knows. The car was using some oil which seemed to be an issue with a few of these motors, I was in the process of trying (through process of elimination with the help of Ford tech support) to figure out. I don't see the two issues being connected but we will see.

This was a more powerful motor than most of the ones you can get from FRP-11:1's instead of 10.5:1's solid roller etc...right around 600 BHP. I should have stuck with a hydro set up making power in the mid range instead. No valve adjustments and way better longevity-regardless of the outcome on this motor I will convert it to hydro set up. Ford told me that if there are issues with this engine they will give me a new one (which will be hydraulic roller).

Here is some info on this motor-right from the FRP website. The hydro motor they offer has less power but maybe a better fit for street driving.

Gary-do you have a spec from Ford as to what those heads flow @ .600 and .700" lift?
That's a real nice street cam as is. |
Keep us posted. My Rpush 427 SW has a "proprietary as does their 550 and 650 HP engines. I am sure somebody has torn into one and knows the specs.

I dont have flow #'s from Ford-I saw an older post on a Mustang Forum that the 2.08's/1.60's were doing 300 CFM/.600 Intake & 225 CFM/.600 Exhaust but, again, this was a few years back and with a different Cam so I would think these new heads are doing better than that. The motor ran even better than I had expected once we got it dialed in, now my big issue is I think Im going to switch to a hydraulic set up but I dont want to lose too much HP. I will need to change everything if I go this route-AND those solids sound mighty good:D

This is one of the reasons I'd NEVER run a solid roller on the street. The probability of failure is just too high.

300 cfm is only fair but with a cam that lifts over .600, they are restricting power. 340 and 240 should be easily attainable with them.
Don't think you'll find a hydraulic with specs close to that solid-you will lose HP but may gain or move up torque. Ask Brent or Barry. |
Agreed-I spoke to Brent the day after all of this went down, he was my first call. The guy called me back 7 minutes after I emailed him and has been very helpful. Once I saw the level of damage it became clear that I needed to lean on the warranty with Ford, Brent would get my business if I was not in a warranty situation-he is the kind of person I want to do business with.
I am thinking that since im not racing I may be better off with some lower RPM range torque/power-I just hope Ford will work with me on this, This motor is 14,000 bucks (long block) so I cant see them forcing me to replicate the exact motor since providing me a hydro set up would cost them less??? We will see. |

The only thing I took off were valvecovers and intake/distributor, prior to doing so I spoke to Ford to discuss with them. The damage I listed is only what I was able to see, who knows what else happened once that steel debris started making its way around:( |
Gary i know this a little late, but it never hurts to plan for the future. U should have no problem running that cam on the street. Here is your receipt for success! .
1. Up grade your lifters. 2. Upgrade you rockers to shaft mount for added safety and connivence. 3. Do not let it sit and idle below 1500 for extended period of time. 2. KEEP UP with your lash, if one of the valves requires constant adjustment something is wrong. Valve adjustment should last at least a couple thousand miles with shaft rockers. I have been running a solid roller (over 700 net lift , Ramps about a 2.5 out of 5 on aggressiveness) for 4 years with only one failure (cheep comp cam Endure-X lifters, learned my lesson :CRY:).
