Timing tape / balancer discrepency
The timing marks on my balancer are so light they are difficult to read. I purchases some timing tape matched to the diameter of the balancer. Only me at 30 degrees the tape indicates 27 degrees, a 10% variance. Which one would you believe the tape or the balancer?

Get a flexible tape measure and measure the circumference of the balancer. Divide that distance by 12 (i.e., 360/30). Measure around your balancer from the known TDC by that distance. That is exactly 30 degrees from TDC. That will tell you which is more accurate.
Example: If circumference is 24", then distance around the balancer from TDC to 30 degrees is 24"/12 = 2".

What is your Balancer Diameter? What brand is it? Is there a heavy paint buildup? Most of the true SB (8.2 deck) balancers are 6-3/8" DIA and the tapes both from Mr Gasket and MSD are very close.

The tape length has to match the balancer diameter. Each mark should perfectly line up with the marks on the balancer, as far as spacing goes. You use a degree wheel or a piston stop to see if the tape needs to be moved one way or another.

BTW,
The balancer on my engine was hard to see and hard to read, so I put one of those tapes on it when it was out to be refreshed. It worked fine for the initial tuning. Several years later it was mostly gone and the marks again hard to see. I would have been better off highlighting the balancer with permanent paint.

the balancer is not painted and the diameter is 6.375. the tape is from jets. I like Tommy suggestion as it is independent of both the balancer marks and the tape.

Would it work to just mark the TDC on the balancer with some easily seen paint, then just line that mark up with the pointer on the engine block and read the degrees on the timing light?

I have no experience with jets but I HAVE used the ones mentioned in my post above currently and they are "Right On". Are you sure you got the correct tape for your balancer?

looks like my balancer is 6" instead of 6.375". My fault to assume any component matches stock. Ford 351W indicates 6.375" but mine is 6".

Well that certainly explains the reason they didn't line up. What balancer are you using? Is it 0 balance, or 28 oz? Or ?

If you want to be absolutely sure on diameter, I found these PI Tapes years ago and use them all the time. I have a 2"-12" and a 12"-24". I was surprised how much I use them for various projects! They have many other pretty cool measuring devices as well. Used in aerospace a lot.

As far as balance it 28 oz. no idea of make as it is a crate engine with zero builder info.

Is the balancer a stock type or is it smooth>? is it rubber lined / isolated or appearing solid - >? ( picture would be great )
