IS there any chance the questions gets asked merely because they are genuinely intrigued and just trying to break the ice, to learn more about it?

It really can't be that hard to just turn around and tell them what it is...

For instance:

Q. Is that REAL?

A. It's a... insert brand of car here
(then feel free to continue with, or without, any of the following)

I... bought/built/stole/whatever, from... blah, blah, blah,.
I've had it for... X years, Y months, Z days, hours and minutes but hey, who's counting?
Thanks for noticing I really like it too...
Enjoy your day and hope to see you next time...

There, see... Not that hard!
Or am I missing something?

I like that, no need to be rude.
I usually chuckle and say "I wish it were real. It's a replica, but handles better than the original" although I do like "Tribute car" too.

Default Is it Real?

The first answer tends to be "Yah, touch it" or "if it wasn't my buns would have an incredible road rash". What follows depends on who is asking. Most people tend to say something like, "I always wanted one". Then we launch into a discussion about how affordable they can be, e.g., $/horsepower/fun....go do it! Once in awhile you get someone with an attitude about small blocks or can't get past fidelity to the original, etc. Those folks are rare.
