Yes, I do know of Ed Curtis. I think the camshaft was a little off....way too much duration for a street 408. I have 427's that don't use that much camshaft.+ |

big heads. big cams. big manifolds.. 400 cu in needs to breathe.. super vic. vic jr. air gap. I get lost in all this. lol. all I know is this small cam made the same torque just a few hundred rpms lower. lost some high end hp but not much.. maybe 15.. |

the guy who is working on my car didn't build the motor. I had it done a few years ago. he is just putting the car all together.. then fine tuning it. runs like a r ape. just pings under heavy foot.. |

It’s better when you can do more with less, and it’s possible. |

I've spent quite a while over on the corral forums. They all want you to put the biggest heads you can fit under the hood on any motor. Bigger heads, bigger intakes, bigger duration, bigger lift, etc. That philophsy may produce higher peak HP numbers at WOT, but the street performance of those machines are terrible, especially in a 2400 pound carbureted cobra. |

				 pinging
yes. I hear it all the time. cam to small. your feeding a 400+ motor.. only thing is im not racing it.. so what rpm range do we all run on the street? maybe 1500 to 3500? highway maybe open it up for a few secs.. I want this car to hook up and from light to light as fast as it can. not worried about top end hp.. ill never use it around my town.. my smaller cam made just as much torque as the bigger cam.. HR. maybe lost 15 hp on top end. torque curve is 500 rpms lower which I need for street.. although the bigger cam was dyno at 3900 and up so I don't know what it made @2800 like the small cam I think I made the smart move for street. if I want more torque ill just go with a bigger stroker. maybe a 427 or 434 w.. all under 6000 rpms.. |

If I understand you correctly, your ping occurs at high rpm only. Not in the 1500 to 2700 range when you accelerate.
If it didn't ping on the dyno, I suggest to retard total timing by 3 degrees to countereffect the heat under the bonnet (more heat than on the dyno).

You then may have to bring the ignition advance back to come in a bit quicker in the 1500 to 2700 rpm range.

This is not easy to be done by a novice on the street with loud sidepipes. It's a job for a new dyno run while you monitor the power drop and AFR.

So it happened under acceleration which tells me the mechanical advance came in too fast, and possibly to much total advance.
Recurving it should have solved it, yes.

4 seconds flat makes some big limit bushes that allows the use of a lot of initial without pushing the total too high...with their bushing can run 18 initial while limiting total to 32.FBO Ignition, Distributor tuning and Carburetion Professionals, FBO Ignition systems, Ford Ignition, Mopar Ignition, Ford Distributors, Mopar Distributors, Ford distributor curving, Mopar distributor curving, HEI Ignition, MSD ignition tuning, |
