Default 5.0 Efi -87

Need advice!
I want to gain power to my 1987 5.0 EFI, but have heard that the -87 fuelinjection system (speed-density) is not sutable for this. My goal is to reach appr. 300-350 hp. My original plan was pistons, rods, canshaft & heads.

So: Is it right that -87 (speed-density) is not suitable for tuning and what's your proposal instead?

Best Regards, Roy in Sweden

It is true that the Speed-Density system does not respond kindly to engine modifications.

Convert your Speed-Density system to Mass-Air. Ford Motorsport makes a kit to convert: FMS-M12071F302.

You will need a new harness. I believe that part number includes the harness. If not, there is a kit that includes the harness. Get a good set of AFR 165 heads, and a decent cam. Couple that with a good Cobra/tfs/Edelbrock intake and good exhaust will get you the 300 + mark. lots of 302 (5.0) info on the mustang website www.corral.net

If you get the kit from Ford Racing, it includes the jumper wires to modify your stock harness. From the Ford Racing Website: Mass Air Conversion Kits

MUSTANG KIT INCLUDES:

• EEC-IV mass air processor module assembly
• EEC-IV jumper wire harness
• Mass airflow sensor, hoses, clamps and brackets
• Easy to follow instructions

If you scrounge the individual parts yourself (MAF and computer), then you will also need a harness from a mass air car.
