Default GT40 head casting #s

Hello,

I need some help on my 351w rebuild. I am looking looking for a low cost upgrade to GT40 cast iron heads. Are there only two versions, the regular (frist?) heads and the later "P" Explorer heads?

Could someone please help with the casting numbers? If I buy new, what's a ball park price for each set, complete with valves and springs.

If I buy used (salvage yard) what are the markings of each and which vehicles can I find the heads on. I know the "P"s are on explorers, but what model years should I be looking for.

Thanks Guys
AR.

....seems as if there was an article in Hot Rod about these heads a few years back. I may still have the magazine - will look tonight and let you know what I find.

Default GT 40 heads

This is from Max Performance Ford v8s on a budget.

"just look for 1.84/1.54" vavles,"GT" markings, and F3ZE/F4ZE casting numbers. ford part number F4ZZ-A and F4ZZ-A, Ford racing number M-6049-L302"

The only heads he gives a casting number for are these 1993-1995 cobra GT-40 heads. He also identifies the GT-40p head as being an explorer head. He only gives a part number M-6049-p303.

There are alot of variants in aluminun
GT-40 Turbo-Swirl
GT-40X

The explorer head GT-40P does not have an angle spark plug holes. I wish I could tell you how the might interfear with custom headers.?

Sounds to me like a GT-40P head will flow as well as a late 60's 351w head that has had alot of port work done.

I was talking to Jerry at Bishop Engine in Dallas about how to make some power on a buget. He said call Kieth Kraft. And I said no a budget. He said early 351w block and a set of GT-40P heads and that all the circle track guys use them.

OK all the guys that are gong to type DART, AFR, etc. Some of use might enjoy making some power on a budget.

Bishop has heads for $125 and blocks for $150

Good luck and let us know what else you learn about them.

I like the way you're thinking.
